It’s been a busy time again this April.
Work-wise, I was preparing for a progress report since the beginning of this month and I was pretty anxious about it. But now the report is done, and I can get back to live normal life again. Even better than that, actually…in fact soon the longest holiday ever in the history of Japan will begin: the Golden Week break 2019 will be literally one week long thanks to the fact that the current emperor has decided to abdicate in favor of his eldest son, who will be the new emperor as of May 1st.
This is a unique event, as basically one is the emperor until the day of his death, and abdication is not an exit that has ever been considered. Anyway, to remember and celebrate the occasion, we have some special holidays this year, and so while the usual bank holidays were April 29th, then May 3rd, 4th and 5th, this year we have FROM April 29th UNTIL May 5th. Actually, May 6th, because when a bank holiday falls on a Sunday it is observed on the Monday.
Also, if you don’t know, Japan counts the years as per Gregorian calendar and also as per emperor reigning. We are in the last days of the 31st year of the Heisei (平成) era, which means peace everywhere, and we are about to enter the Reiwa era (令和), which means beautiful harmony. There has been a lot of excitement around this fact, you can’t imagine what a change in era means for the Japanese: update of calendars, and money for a start. But yeah, the hours before the announcement of the new era name were frantic, and now everybody is rushing to replace any of the items they possess which had a date on them…
Another fun fact is that most Japanese aren’t used to such long holidays and it seems many are stressed about the 10-day break as they won’t know what to do with their lives. Go figure. To me this whole thing means I can have two weeks of bank holidays. I have planned an escape, which is going to be awesome thanks to a promising addition to my pastimes: I finally went to a bookstore to look for a coloring book and I found one!
I am not sure whether or how this book is supposed to help the mind to unwind, but have been curious for some time now…I’ve seen some about science, or about nature, both topics being high at the top of the favorite coloring subjects list. I can now finally try the effect of coloring for myself for the first time….well, no not really the first time at coloring right? We all color when we’re kids…just we stop doing that after we grow up. I remember enjoying art topic at school, till I was maybe 13 of 14 year old, then I switched to drawing while in high school, then adulthood came in the way and that hobby was put aside. Tonight, driven by a sudden need to get me at least the basic equipment, I managed to get a set of two books even, including color pencils, and I can’t wait to start coloring them during the upcoming holidays.
Time to see what my inner artist is still capable of.

Sono stati giorni impegnativi questi di aprile.
Dal punto di vista lavorativo, mi sono preparata per una presentazione del mio lavoro e ero abbastanza ansiosa per la cosa. Ora pero’ e’ fatta, e posso tornare alla vita normale, anzi meglio… infatti presto comincerà il periodo di festa più lungo nella storia del Giappone: la Golden Week 2019 sara’ letteralmente una settimana grazie al fatto che l’imperatore corrente ha deciso di abdicare in favore del figlio, che sara’ incoronato il primo maggio.
Questo e’ un evento unico, perché un imperatore e’ tale fino a che muore, in pratica, e fino a questo momento abdicare non era una opzione. In ogni caso, per ricordare e celebrare l’occasione, quest’anno abbiamo festività speciali e quindi mentre le ferie solite sono il 29 aprile e dal 3 al 5 maggio, quest’anno abbiamo DAL 29 aprile FINO al 5 maggio. Anzi, fino al 6 maggio perché qui quando un giorno di festa cade di domenica, lo si sposta al lunedì.
C’e’ poi un altro fatto, per chi non lo sapesse. Il Giappone conta gli anni sia secondo il calendario gregoriano, sia in base l’era imperiale. Attualmente siamo negli ultimi giorni dell’era imperiale Heisei (平成), che significa pace ovunque, e stiamo per entrare nell’era Reiwa (令和), che significa bella armonia. Non potete immaginare quanto tumulto crea questo fatto, perché per i giapponesi significa, giusto per citarne un paio, aggiornamento dei calendari e delle banconote. Comunque, le ore prima dell’annuncio del nome per la nuova era erano proprio da matti, e ora tutti corrono a rimpiazzare ogni cosa che abbia una data per stare al passo coi tempi.
Ora, un fatto interessante: la maggior parte dei giapponesi non sono abituati a ponti festivi cosi lunghi, e pare che molti siano proprio stressati perché non sanno cosa fare di questi 10 giorni. Incredibile. Per me tutto questo si traduce invece in due settimane di vacanze, che saranno fantastiche grazie all’ultimo acquisto per i miei passatempi: ho trovato finalmente un libro da colorare per adulti! Non sono ancora sicura se e come questo libro dovrebbe aiutare a rilassare la mente, ma la mia curiosità al riguardo e’ stata stimolata da qualche tempo a questa parte…ho visto anche libri con soggetti presi dal settore scientifico o dalla natura, che sarebbero i soggetti in cima alla mia lista di cose da colorare.
Ora finalmente posso testarne l’effetto per la prima volta…beh, a dire il vero non e’ proprio la prima volta che coloro. Da piccoli lo facciamo tutti, solo che poi da adulti ci fermiamo. Mi ricordo che amavo l’ora di arte a scuola, fino ai 14 anni, e poi alle superiori mi sono dedicata al disegno…poi infine uno cresce e quell’hobby e’ finito in soffitta. Ma stasera, guidata da un bisogno improvviso a procurarmi gli attrezzi base, sono riuscita addirittura a trovare due libri da colorare, con tanto di colori, e non vedo l’ora di iniziarci durante queste ferie.
E’ tempo di vedere quello che il mio artista interiore riesce ancora a fare.
