Serial Imbeciles on Social Media

A little break from the current events, I thought I could share some snippets of my (virtual) interactions with people wanting to buy my stuff. Because upon leaving Japan, whenever that will happen, I have to get rid of most of my furniture, belongings, and appliances, I have started to sell or give away what I don’t need anymore. To do that, I thought of using the social media platforms, simply because they reach out to virtually anyone, increasing my chances of selling.

Well…it became a time-wasting, patience-daring activity. I reckon I should have started to record every single exchange with people when I started sharing the posts…I could collect enough material for a book. I am naming these people, simply, imbeciles.

So, I share a post to a group about miscellaneous items, with DETAILED info about SIZES and PRICES in the description, plus set of photos of said items. First of all, I receive tens of ‘likes’ to my post by imbeciles who never ask me about anything in the post…they just “like” it.

The most common reactions are: “how much?” (without referring to anything specifically. Many actually use the shorter “hm” to ask for the price….it took me days to figure it out); “Interested!” (no further clarifications); “mine please!” (no further clarifications); “I need this” (no further clarifications); “location?” (note, the description already has that information). As if moronic requests weren’t enough, I moreover have to deal with the imbeciles who think I am a delivery company. More annoying are those who I wrongly believe have checked the info, because we exchange all details for the pickup, but at the end they ask the very dumb question ”how much?”… But because I want to sell my stuff, I have to follow up each request and politely ask for clarifications. Sometimes my questions receive no reply at all…WTF. They are those who “interested!”, by the way…Psychopaths!

Another category of imbeciles is people who are browsing randomly. Oddly, people seem to have plenty of time to spend on social network platforms but are too busy otherwise. Anyway, they browse and ask things like “I live near and I need several things”, to which I reply that they should tell me which things they want from me (hinting to “check my post, first”), but no, they strike back with a “what do you have?”…. what am I, a furniture dealer? FFS. And let’s not even delve into the explosion of request messages for the free items. There is such a rush to get them, as if what I am giving away is the last on earth. How greedy.

Anyway, to eep it short, I have essentially acquired deep knowledge of the imbeciles’ behaviors to be entitled to a honorary degree. And I have a profile of the Serial Imbecile on Social Media: a person too lazy and too used to technology (i.e., internet and smartphones) that they grow desperate if they don’t find anything to claim. Serial imbeciles are also very demanding, cheap and spoiled, they expect they are the only ones to have claimed something, they want the item right now, they want it in great conditions, lowest price possible (better if free), delivered it to their homes, perhaps thanked even for buying the stuff.

I hope I can soon stop interacting with morons. Stupidity is hard to beat and I have no patience left.

The Worldwide Isolation Saga

Another predictable consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic is that my flight, like all others, was canceled. There are some flights departing from Tokyo, perhaps, but because of the hundreds restrictions in place everywhere, right now the one and only way to travel for those like me who are abroad is to return to our own country, possibly without overlays.

For now I don’t even know when I will have the possibility to fly. In an attempt to plan my next move at times when plans simply can’t be made, I bought a new flight, the next available direct flight to Italy. I will sort out the refund for the other canceled flight later…but still, there is no guarantee that even the new one I booked, so far scheduled to depart, will actually take me home. Basically, I am part of the very large group of those “stranded travelers” abroad. It is far from being over, I do actually fear it is only the beginning…now cases of infection by the virus here are growing (not surprisingly, d’uh), and so there is a high chance that I can’t make it out of here soon.

This time the flight home matters, because this time it is not another trip to visit family and then back to Japan…this time I am leaving Japan for good. But all I can do for now is wait until flights are restored, because everything else depends on that. So, I am staying at home, been doing it for about 2 months now, and entertaining myself with sewing stuff.

Now, as a person who doesn’t suffer solitude (I actually welcome it) I am coping decently well with the isolation. Others are not doing that well….I have seen plenty of reactions to the restrictive measures adopted by the various governments in the world, I have seen the comic take, the funny one, the depressing side, the sad, the crazy one, I have seen people accepting their fate, people rebelling, complaining, or encouraging, helping each other, I mean there is no shortage of responses to the home-confinement rules.

The common denominator is that a lot of people don’t really know what to do with the sudden freedom-non-freedom. Articles about “what to do at home during quarantine”, “how to stay fit during quarantine”, “how to take care of your soul during quarantine”, and many more how-to’s are booming lately. Until now people didn’t need guidance (actually they dismissed that), but suddenly they can’t cope with being within four walls, can’t cope with being together with family within those walls…so much that domestic violence has increased. Modern times have allowed us to stay away form each other without realizing it, kids go to school, parents work all day, people go to the gym, they shop, and all that keeps our emotions and relationships balanced. And obviously, when all the exhaust vents we use become unavailable, we realize that going backwards to a simple living is not feasible because we don’t know what it is.

This tells us that society has made us so used to give everything for granted, so depending on first world’s commodities that a 4-week period of halt drives us bananas….It takes its toll, no doubt, it can be psychologically devastating to many people, and the longer the worse, so I am not trying to belittle the feelings of those who are genuinely suffering through it. And yet all these how-to’s, rebranded and repurposed, seem new to many…to look for books to read, crafts to make, skills to learn, fitness routines to practice, recipes to cook, games to play, movies to watch, et cetera. It’s ALWAYS been out there, it’s nothing new (think of the home-fitness videos….always been there since the 60’s). They were simply ignored because nobody had the time, but they are the substitute of those given-for-granted commodities, now luxuries, people are struggling to keep. One thing is sure: the next Masterchef edition will have thousands of contestants!

On a more serious note, for each of those home-confined ones, there is a person who is out there doing their best to make their agony shorter, doctors, nurses, supermarket workers, cleaners, who I guess would love to just sit home and stare a blank wall for a while. We are living difficult times, and it is only global cooperation that will get us out of this mess, we should behaving all as if we were one. Hang in there.

Coraggio.
