We are nearing the end of a year that was destructive to put it mildly. There are no words left to comment on all the things that went wrong and that affected all sectors of life. People’s health was jeopardized, lives were lost which could have been saved, jobs sank, economies slumped, whole continents were shut, gone were the social activities, gone was the entertainment, gone were the hugs, for a while gone was toilet paper too. Essentially, it was a year of loss on all levels.
But, but, but there must be something that worked fine…perhaps that we have finally recognized that working from home is doable, that reinventing oneself is possible, that letting go of the superfluous is not such a tragedy, that we can rely on technology a bit more, and that transparency is all what matters.
An important event that contributes to brighten a year so dark is that finally the Trump presidency is soon over. The last 4 years have been the proof that greed, lack of moral integrity and tact, lies, mockery, prejudices, discrimination, opportunism and personal interests have effects and affect more than the intended direct targets.
What will definitely mark this year, however, is that this is the first time in history a vaccine for a novel virus is produced in less than 12 months from the virus’s discovery. This alone should make up for the c**p we had to pull through. It was March when the world had proof of the spreading of a new virus, and massive work in collecting data, sharing information and insights, allowed us to learn about the effects of it. And with the learning came approaches to the problem…all that in a record 9 months time. This is absolutely remarkable and renews my faith in science and technology (not that I really needed a reminder….science works!). This shows that when the goal is one and there’s commitment, progress goes at lightning speed and everyone benefits from that, even the serial and chronic anti-science ones. The road to full recovery is long, no doubt, but we do have shields now.
So, for the time being, travels are still restricted, gatherings limited and our daily routines are subject to rules, and I know all that is very hard for some people to accept: now more than ever, regardless of religious beliefs or tradition, people want, demand to spend the holidays together, so Christmas has become the symbol of a fight for “freedom”. I can’t say I agree, but I do understand such need…many people have put themselves through months of distancing and solitary living, while many other people, the morons who deny everything in the face of the hardest evidence, only make restrictions lasting longer with their I-do-not-subjugate attitude.
They are the ones I don’t understand and can’t justify, because it’s them who make all the efforts of the rule-abiding people vane. They are also the ones who will likely get a vaccine as soon as one of their family members will end up infected, the same ones who will demand treatment if severely ill and overload the health care system…but for now they have the audacity to protest that “COVID-19 is a hoax”…

Ci stiamo avvicinando alla fine di un anno che per dirla in maniera riduttiva e’ stato distruttivo. Non ci sono parole per descrivere tutto quello che e’ andato male e che ha toccato tutti i settori. la salute delle persone e’ stata messa a sacco, molte vite che si potevano salvare sono state perdute, il mercato del lavoro e’ sprofondato, l’economia pure, interi continenti si sono fermati, addio attività sociali, addio intrattenimento, addio abbracci e -per un limitato periodo- addio anche carta igienica. In pratica, e’ stato un anno di perdite in tutto.
E pero’ ci deve pur essere qualcosa che e’ andata bene….forse il fatto che finalmente si e’ capito che lavorare da casa si può fare, che reinventarsi e’ possibile, che vivere senza il superfluo non e’ poi una tragedia, che ci possiamo fidare di più della tecnologia, e che la trasparenza e’ ciò che conta.
Un evento importante che contribuisce a illuminare un po’ un anno tanto buio e’ che finalmente la presidenza di Trump e’ finita. Gli ultimi 4 anni sono stati la prova lampante che l’avidità, la mancanza di tatto e integrità morale, le bugie, la derisione, i pregiudizi, la discriminazione, l’opportunismo e l’interesse personale hanno un effetto e hanno effetto su più che i gli obiettivi diretti.
Quello che pero’ segnerà per sempre quest’anno e’ che per la prima volta nella storia un vaccino per un nuovo virus e’ disponibile in meno di 12 mesi dalla scoperta del virus stesso. Questo fatto soltanto dovrebbe da solo essere abbastanza per compensare le difficolta che abbiamo dovuto sopportare. Era marzo quando il mondo ha avuto la conferma della diffusione di un nuovo virus, e un lavoro enorme tra raccogliere dati, condividere informazioni e scoperte, ci ha consentito di conoscerne gli effetti. E con l’apprendimento sono poi arrivate le soluzioni al problema…tutto in un tempo record di 9 mesi. Questo e’ un fatto assolutamente degno di nota, e rinnova la mia fede nella scienza e nel progresso tecnologico (non che ne avessi bisogno…la scienza funziona!). Dimostra anche che quando l’obiettivo e’ comune e c’e’ dedizione, i progressi vanno alla velocità della luce, e alla fine tutti ne traggono benefici, anche gli anti-scienza cronici e seriali. Certo, la strada verso una ripresa completa e’ lunga, ma almeno adesso abbiamo degli scudi.
Ancora per il momento i viaggi sono limitati, cosi come i gruppi di persone consentiti, le attività quotidiane sono ancora soggette a regole, e so che tutto ciò e’ difficile da accettare per molti: ora più che mai, indipendentemente da religione o tradizione, la gente vuole, anzi esige, passare le vacanze insieme, e il natale e’ diventato il simbolo di una lotta per la “libertà”. Non posso dire di essere d’accordo con questa visione, ma ne capisco le ragioni…tantissima gente si e’ sobbarcata mesi di isolamento e solitudine, mentre tanta altra gente con i suoi comportamenti da io-non-mi-sottometto, gli idioti che negano tutto alla faccia dell’evidenza più lampante, non fa altro che allungare il periodo regolamentato.
Loro sono quelli che invece non giustifico perché sono proprio loro che rendono vani i sacrifici fatti dagli altri. Sono loro quelli che poi non appena uno dei loro familiari si rivela contagiato corrono al vaccino, sono gli stessi che magari pretendono di essere curati e sovraccaricano il sistema sanitario…ma per ora hanno il coraggio di protestare che “Non ce n’e’ coviddi”…
