All you need is LOVE @MAM

What is love?, Couple in love, Love in the losing, Family and love, Love beyond.

Love is something you fall into. Complimenti MAM!

****************

As usual, MAM Mori Art Museum, put up a fantastic exhibition.

To celebrate the 10 years, the museum organized a special exhibition with theme LOVE. The title is "All you need is LOVE" and takes the visitor through the important phases of a person's life and relationships, and it assembles remarkably all the manifestations of love from the most conventional ones to the most questionable, witty, love in the past and in the present, love in the internet era and love for the humankind, homosexual love, erotism, obsession, quasi-perversion.

Five the sections, grouping something like 200 artworks boasting names like De Chirico, Dali', Chagall, Magritte, Frida Kalho: What is love?, Couple in love, Love in the losing, Family and love, Love beyond. Photography is not allowed at the exhibition, apart from the installation by Kusama Yayoi, a well known Japanese and eccentric artist who loves decorating any creation and even herself with polka dots, so if you really want to see what this whole love thing is, either go to the museum (exhibit's on until September 1) or visit the website for a quick round through :)

Among the noticeable artworks, a beautiful sculpture of Paolo and Francesca (yes, Dante's comedy lovers); a short video titled "52 guaranteed ways", which is basically a funny video how-to for men, on how to get and keep their woman;  touching photos by Dashti, picturing a couple's life in a region between Iran and Iraq during the war; Asada family's portraits, engaged in various roles such as firefighter, patients, super heroes; very clever the collection of photos and media by a French artist who sent the breakup letter from her ex to other women and asked them to interpret and respond , their own personal ways. Alternative artistic expression are covered too, nude shots, sex, punk, with lots of photos of Lolita girls, overly tattooed and pierced  men and women, people with split tongue. There is, then, the polka dot section, a room with mirror walls full of tentacle-like shapes that contributed to the artist's fame; finally a tribute to the digital world with manga heroins, video games, touch pads.

What I think was missing? How about some tango….videos, images….I don't know….isn't tango itself love?

Not only the polka dot theme was central in the exhibition, but the whole Roppongi Hills was "infected": there even was a open air cafe by Louise Bourgeois's spider called polka dot cade, where, despite the heavy and humid summer air which is enveloping Tokyo in these days, people gathered to have a cool drink or to watch Tokyo Bay fireworks.

Love is something you fall into. Well, done MAM!
