Bay Cruise Dinner

There’s nothing better than experiencing a bay cruise in Yokohama to enter the right holiday season mood.

My evening began at Osanbashi pier, which is where all ocean cruise ships dock. While not everyone can afford an ocean cruise, there are many other, humbler or posher, cruise plans, like wedding receptions, birthday parties, new year’s celebrations, watching the summer fireworks and such that we can all try. The plan I signed up for was the most basic one, which consists of just dinner and drinks while the boat tours the bay. 

The boat for the cruise, called Royal Wing, is basically a restaurant on water serving lunch, tea-time and dinner and can easily host something like three hundred people at a full capacity. There were in fact 3 or 4 banquet halls, which featured even a bar counter and a stage for various performances. There was also a fancier restaurant where people could dine in a more intimate atmosphere, while watching the view. All party rooms were full, which surprised me and at the same time it did not…I bet the boat fills up every day. I may have one or two concerns about all the pollution all these cruises generate, but the entertainment industry doesn’t care about that. And somehow, neither do we, service users seeking for new experiences.

The hall I had dinner in was at the bottom of the boat (nicely decorated inside and outside for the upcoming Christmas, obviously) and it had round tables for diners and round windows for watching outside along the sides.The big bolts and thick steel holding the glass looked real enough, so I believe one doesn’t need to worry about being washed away in case of rough waters. The food was Chinese, and enough to feed double the number of people in there. 

Halfway through the cruise I went to the outdoor deck, despite the freezing air, to check the boat and more importantly the night view. Attached to the railing on one side of the observation deck there was a heart shaped frame made of pink led lights, and predictably everyone waited patiently in the cold in oder to take a photo.

Because I blindly joined a group, and because I had never bothered before to check the various plans offered by the cruise company, I didn’t know what to expect. However, had I known I was going to dine in a viewless room (could see form the round windows only standing in front of one), I probably would have tried something else…there’s no point in being on a boat if one can’t see the outside from their tables while cruising. Still, I got my ticket at a discounted price so I am not complaining.

All considered, although this is not something I would like to do often, I was positively impressed by the level of the tour. I signed up for the most basic course and yet we had a good quality dinner, the harbor view, and plenty of entertainment: a short piano and flute performance entertained the guests with a mix of songs one could say were fitting the Christmassy atmosphere, then a ballon artist created bear or dog balloons for the children (and that helped with keeping them quiet too), and just to make sure guests can bring home a memorable souvenir, a professional photographer walked around the room and took pictures of people wearing sailors hats.

Like all good things, the cruise ended too quickly and I found myself back on land before realizing it was all over. But the evening was not over yet, as something else was planned to happen after dinner. I will write about it in a later post, so stay tuned.

Non c’e’ niente di meglio che provare una mini crociera a Yokohama per entrare nel pieno dell’atmosfera festiva.

La mia serata e’ iniziata al molo Osanbashi, che e’ dove attraccano tutte le crociere. Non tutti si possono permettere una crociera da giro del mondo, ma per fortuna ci sono altre opzioni, più o meno modeste, come matrimoni, feste di compleanno, di capodanno, eccetera che tutti possiamo provare. Il programma che ho scelto era uno proprio minimale che consisteva in una cena a bordo con giro della baia.

In pratica la nave che offre il servizio altri non e’ che un ristorante sull’acqua per pranzi e cene e può contenere fino a circa trecento persone. Difatti c’erano tre o quattro sale per cerimonie, con tanto di angolo bar e palco per l’orchestra. C’era pure un ristorante più piccolo e molto più sciccoso fatto per chi volesse cenare in una atmosfera più intima e osservare la città. Tutte le sale erano piene, e la cosa mi ha stupito e non, allo stesso tempo…scommetto che ogni giorno la nave e’ sempre piena. Mi piacerebbe sapere quanto inquinano tutte ste crociere brevi, ma all’industria dell’intrattenimento questo non interessa. Beh, da un lato non interessa molto neanche a noi che usufruiamo del servizio e vogliamo provare cose nuove.

La sala in cui ho cenato si trovava alla base della nave (che era decorata dentro e fuori con addobbi natalizi, manco a dirlo) e aveva tavoli rotondi e oblò’ lungo i due lati che erano i fianchi della nave. Il pesante ferro e i grossi bulloni che tenevano il vetro saldo sembravano veri, quindi suppongo che reggano in caso di mare grosso.

I piatti erano tutti cucina cinese, e c’era abbastanza da mangiare per il doppio di quelli che si trovavano li. A meta’ tragitto sono andata sul ponte della nave per dare un’occhiata al panorama fuori, nonostante il freddo gelido. Attaccata a un lato della ringhiera c’era una cornice di lucine a forma di cuore, e ovviamente non c’e’ bisogno di dire che tutti hanno pazientemente aspettato al freddo per poter fare una foto li.

Visto che ho partecipato a questa cena un po’ alla cieca, e visto che non avevo mai pensato di dare un’occhiata alle varie opzioni che la compagnia offriva, non sapevo cosa aspettarmi. Infatti se avessi saputo che saremmo finiti in una sala senza vista (si poteva vedere fuori dall’oblò solo in piedi), avrei provato qualcos’altro…qual’e’ il vantaggio di essere in barca se uno non può vedere fuori da dove sta seduto? Ma comunque, avendo preso il biglietto a prezzo vantaggioso, non mi lamento di nulla. Come si dice, a caval donato non si guarda in bocca.

Considerando il tutto, seppure questa non e’ una cosa che farei spesso, sono stata positivamente colpita dal livello. Ho scelto la cosa più basilare eppure la cena era di qualità, avevamo la vista dal mare, e c’era un sacco di intrattenimenti: musica dal vivo con una breve selezione di melodie che si addicevano al clima natalizio e festivo, un artista che creava animali con i palloncini per il molti bambini (e che sono quindi stati tranquilli invece di scalmanare), e anche un fotografo professionista che a richiesta faceva foto ai passeggeri facendo loro indossare cappelli da marinaio (cosi da avere un bel ricordo della serata).

Come tutte le cose belle, la crociera e’ finita troppo in fretta e mi sono ritrovata nuovamente al molo. Ma la serata non e’ finita li, c’era qualcos’altro in programma di cui parlerò la prossima volta.
