When it’s so hot that the walls burn and the skin perspires like a watering hose, when the air is so thick it can be sliced like bread, when it’s that hot not even a dip in a pool helps. I tried it and felt like a thermal bath…but the beach is no better on such days either.
The closest one to the metropolis is Zushi beach, which -due to its very accessibility- is overly crowded and noisy, but is a great place to people watch (all sorts of people, really). I don’t particularly like that beach, unless I go there outside of the two-month summer period. In that case it’s really nice, quiet, the water is cleaner, cooler, more enjoyable, although for my standards it still is below average. I went there on one of those crazy hot days, this time to cool down by hopping on a short boat cruise along the coast.
The only cruise course available goes from Zushi to the island of Enoshima (roughly a 10km straight line) and back, offering interesting views in between. Well, I actually don’t know how interesting or how pretty those views can be because on that day we followed a different course…there was some training event related to the next year’s olympic games near and around the island on Enoshima, so that water space couldn’t be disturbed. People were of course told about the change upon purchasing the ticket, but still it was a bit of a disappointment. I would have, say, offered a discounted ticket to make up for the change of route….
Disappointment remark made, it was actually enjoyable. Just being aboard a speed boat, feeling the wind, the crashing waves, watching the coast and its houses tiny in the distance, the lines of beach umbrellas, and other boats sailing in the distance…it all felt good. There even was a guy who lectured us on all the landmarks and spots of interest.
We passed few other beaches, less crowded than the main Zushi beach (not because they are worse but because getting to them is really frustrating due to massively heavy traffic), and reached a cluster of rocks where a tiny lighthouse stands. Close to it is a shinto temple well known for being picturesque and for featuring a small red gate on a rock in the middle of the sea. Nothing else was of interest for the remaining part of the cruise, just the coast, at times rugged and at times opening up into small beach coves with a town behind. All these beaches along the coast are, in my opinion, better alternatives to Zushi, although reaching them requires some patience.
I do hope the cruise course had to be altered only for a few days, I wouldn’t mind to take a second tour and see Enoshima island properly, from the sea.

Quando fa cosi caldo che i muri bruciano e la pelle traspira come un annaffiatoio, quando l’aria e’ cosi spessa che si taglia come pane, quando e’ cosi’ caldo neanche un tuffo in piscina porta refrigerio. Ci ho provato, ma sembrava una vasca termale….ma in questi casi la spiaggia non e’ tanto meglio. Quella più vicina all’area metropolitana e’ Zushi, che -dato il suo facile accesso- e’ sovraffollata e rumorosa, anche se e’ perfetta per osservare la gente (proprio di ogni tipo).
Non amo particolarmente questa spiaggia, tranne quando ci vado fuori stagione e in quel caso e’ tranquilla, più pulita e più apprezzabile ma per i miei standard e’ comunque sotto la media. In uno di quesi giorni di fuoco mi sono recata a Zushi per rinfrancarmi stavolta con un breve giro in barca.
L’unica scelta e’ per un percorso che va da Zushi fino all’isola di Enoshima (in linea retta distante circa 10km) e ritorno, e regala interessanti viste lungo il tragitto. A dire il vero non ho idea di quanto interessanti o belle siano queste viste, perché quel giorno la barca e’ andata da tutt’altra parte….c’era difatti una sorta di allenamento o preparazione per le olimpiadi dell’anno prossimo vicino l’isola di Enoshima, e quindi quello spazio era interdetto a altre imbarcazioni. Chiaramente la gente che si recava ad acquistare il biglietto veniva avvisata del cambiamento, ma la delusione rimane. Che so, fate uno sconto per compensare col cambio di rotta, ad esempio…
In ogni caso, lamentela fatta, e’ stato bello. Il semplice fatto di essere in barca, sentire il vento, gli spruzzi delle onde, osservare la costa e le abitazioni rimpicciolite dalla distanza, le file di ombrelloni, e le barche a vela…si stava benissimo. C’era persino una guida a bordo che spiegava i vari punti di interesse.
Abbiamo visto altre spiagge, meno affollate di quella a Zushi (non perché queste siano peggio, ma perché raggiungerle e’ un’odissea a causa del traffico), e poi abbiamo raggiunto un gruppo di scogli con un faro. Li vicino c’e’ un tempio scintoista famoso per via di un arco di legno situato su uno scoglio in mezzo al mare. Non c’era molto altro di interessante per il resto della crociera, solo la costa, fatta a tratti da spiagge e a tratti da coste rocciose e frastagliate. Tutte queste spiagge, secondo me, sono meglio della spiaggia di Zushi, seppure raggiungerle richiede pazienza.
Spero che il percorso della crociera era stato alterato solo temporaneamente perché mi piacerebbe un secondo tentativo e vedere per bene l’isola di Enoshima dal mare.
