Sicily and the spritz

The beginning of September coincided with the beginning of my summer vacation and I was glad to finally take a break. As per usual, I went to Sicily, looking forward to some sunny beach days and ice creams.

On my very rare window seat flights (ears don’t like the air pressure), I could have a pretty spectacular view of central Japan while crossing it to get to Seoul, my first stop. Tokyo metropolitan area was at some point replaced by green mountains where I could easily spot the ski resorts slopes (I will see you in February, dear!), then valleys and mountains again, morning fog trapped between the peaks. The sky was dotted with clouds that looked like marshmallow clusters.

While approaching Seoul airport, I could see blobs of emerged sandy sea bed, carved and shaped by the currents, that looked like dune islands. So cool. It turns out this stunning landscape exists solely thanks to the tremendous water level variation with the tides (as much as 9 meters!!). I had the sun in front of me upon landing so I couldn’t take a picture from the cabin. You have to take my word.

My Sicilian holiday was short, this time, even including the several stop-overs. No chance to get away for a while and visit a new destination, but just the usual stop-over in Rome allowing for a quick catch up with the usual suspects. Speaking of which, it looks like Rome airport, although at a very slow pace, is making tiny progresses in terms of service and organisation (you who went there know what I mean)…even the electronic passport readers work, at times! Yay! But I also have to add that living in the east asian sector of the world makes me an intolerant, impatient, spoiled person whenever I am outside of aforementioned zone, hence I am not an objective judge.

I can easily assert that this trip will be remembered as “The Aperol Spritz Trip”, since that was my only choice for all the situations that required/involved drinking: meeting my friends in Rome, upon my arrival in Catania, after a beach day, with girl friends in my home town, every time accompanied by a mouthwatering feast of small appetisers and finger food. Oh joy.

About the beach, heh, what I had envisioned did not happen and I managed to spend only one afternoon by the sea, a windy afternoon in the beautiful setting of a regional park's natural reserve. Anyway, it was not that I didn’t get other chances because of uncooperative weather, as it was really gorgeous, rather because of the stretched (time- and schedule-wise) trip. In fact, I made it coincide with a wedding celebration, that of the youngest of my female cousins.

Although I am not a huge fan of these very expensive but highly symbolic weddings, of the rituals, the food and what not, of the way we do them, one good thing they do is to bring together the entire extended family. And in Sicily family does matter, if you know what I mean. Because of the wedding, I could finally catch up on life events with some cousins I hadn't seen in years.

On the other hand, I realised I can't live there anymore (see the comment above about services). At least not until my life will require dynamism, enjoyment and entertainment, besides a job to allow me a decent lifestyle…don’t blame me. It is not fun to see the disappointed look of all the people when I dismiss their "come back" requests with a snort, but that's what it is. I do enjoy looking at my land and its colours, I do love the solitude, the smell of clean air, the bonds, I do. But it’s not time yet to settle back. Besides, soon enough nobody will be able to get in nor out my home town anyway, as I could judge from the rickety roads around it (tell me again about services).

But fear not, I will keep showing up.

************
