City ward sports center rocks

Every municipality has its own sports center and residents simply need to show up, either sign up for membership or not, depending on the ward, and use the facilities. Once a member, people pay per day of use, or per activity, again depending on the ward they live in.

Compared to a gym, sports centres are way way cheaper, even those requiring a membership. In fact, while signing up at a gym means that one has to pay a monthly membership fee, normally very pricy even if it is adjusted to the chosen plan and regardless of how many times one actually uses the facility, a membership at the city sports center instead means to only register, get one access card with some credit on it and then pay per time. Most sports centres won’t change more than 5 bucks for either a time-limited or unlimited day usage. Some sports centres, like the one in my city, don’t even require a membership, you just go buy a ticket for your desired activity (training room or court), exchange it for a pass and start your session.

Now, why I didn’t use the city’s sports center in these past 10 years, I don’t know. Or actually I do: laziness, the mother of all excuses.

I have always thought that joining a gym would be a good idea: I make a regular appointment with fitness, I get my mind off stuff and it is always a good way to destress. However, the one exercise I like and I can keep up with the most is running and I like running outside. So the need for a gym is only a necessity during the cold months, when I am even greater at making up excuses, or when it rains (and oh boy in Japan it rains). But, as mentioned, signing up to a gym means that I would have to pay a tremendous monthly fee for just running a few times a month for a few months. There are other ways I could use the gym, true, like attending evening classes or swimming, but there are some difficulties even there. Anyway, at that point I could have tried the fitness center in the city. True. And yet…

First the issue was that I didn’t know about it, in my first years in Japan. Then the issue became the language. Then the next issue was that I had no company and going alone was not an option. So, yes, excuses, right. Especially if I add that the center is a walk away from where I live.

Lately, instead, I found a colleague who also wants to join a gym but wants the freedom to go without the burden of a (very expensive) monthly fee…you know, us researchers are shamefully dirt poor. I must say that, now that (finally) the weather seems to be getting stable and pleasantly warm, using the fitness center would not be a necessity since we could run outside again, but we decided to try anyway, in order to know how things worked there or how easy it was to enter.

Well, I was surprised. There are two or three courts, one training room with plenty of weight lifting machines, spinning bikes and treadmills, nice changing rooms with showers, and so on. All we needed to do was to simply pay 300yen for three hours in the training room. And we didn’t even have to show IDs to prove we were residents!

The only disadvantage I can see in using the sports center is that its capacity is limited. The place is not equipped with many of the same training machine, so I can imagine that evenings or weekends it could be difficult to go through one’s own training routine without having to wait for a free piece. The same problem can happen at a regular gym, though.

But again, now I can basically resume my outdoor running…however, it is nice to know that I can always have a last minute plan B.

All in all, really, I don’t know why I didn’t start going there much earlier... No more excuses now.

************

No, anzi, no, lo so: pigrizia.
