Customer service rocks

When things like what I am about to tell happen, I regain faith in humanity. And I appreciate the well known, efficient Japanese service even more.

It’s a warm -warm for December, that is- but extremely windy morning, grey and dull, it’s early and I have just woken up, feeling too sick to go to work.

Then somebody is at my door, and when I open I recognise the post office clerk who, the day before, had taken my parcel and processed it. It was all done quickly, as efficient as always, then I went to work. In the evening I found a hand written note in my mailbox, from that very clerk, saying they couldn’t send the parcel to Australia because of some of the items in it. Since it was too late, I had decided to go to the post office first thing the morning after. The above mentioned morning.

But the woman was quicker, she got me before I could get her. First she explained that I could not send those items to that place because it has strict rules in that regard, so she suggested that I go to the office and get reimbursed of my expense. So, why bothering at all to come to me and tell me in person? She had already gone out of her way to put a note in my mailbox!! Well, as she said, it was her day off at the post office, so she made sure she was the one to deal with my problem. This is customer service!!

Anyway, it doesn’t end there. After I have profusely thanked her for the bother (I mean, really, she could have just left it at it) she goes, only to rings my doorbell again minutes later, this time she brought my parcel, my money and a little token (to apologise for the trouble she is giving me — as if the problem is her doing, not the strict rules). In the end, I got everything sorted without even leaving my own place. She made my day. I was even more grateful when it started raining later, so that I didn’t have to go out in that bad weather at all.

Thank you Ms post office clerk, it was really not necessary at all. I appreciate all your efforts and I will make sure I’ll pass it forward, somehow. Lots of blessings your way.

Christmas dinner party - Take II

If I managed to survive the first of my holiday dinners, I barely survived the second one which was one I dreaded most: with my coworkers! All in all it went well, but I was nervous anyway. I guess it all goes back to the quintessential problem of having mostly male coworkers, in the sense that if I want to be heard I have to learn to raise the voice.

The last day of work in this year for many of us, it was an abnormally warm day. The air was almost stuffy, grey clouds were hanging low since the previous night, and even if some could have guessed it rained, none of us could have imagined that a crazy storm would hit us later in the evening. The wind was so strong that all doors and windows were noisily slamming (my window handle broke and I couldn’t shut the window at all), rain was pouring and it really felt one of those last days on earth kind of evenings.

But my guests came over, brought more than enough supplies, and partied. Then the problem was finding a nice way to send them all home. I am surely not the kind of person who stays cool and guilt-free when it’s the moment to get them all out. But, with a worsening storm and an approaching last train time in the recipe, I had no choice but to persuade a group of drunk men (mostly men) over 30 to, ehm, leave. Did I say I had another event planned for the day after as well? Tough. It is just tough job to do. I mean, that of having to put an end to the party. I hate to be the bad guy.

Anyway, rewind to the entertaining bits of the dinner.

My friends were all in the perfect party mood, they got me plenty of food and drinks, they played nice and got me more presents than I would need. And, for once, nothing in my apartment was damaged! No cracked chairs, no broken book shelves, no stains, no dead plants. But I had taken my precautions, too, by putting away all potential dangers. Heh.

We did play again a secret santa present exchange game, and this time my guests were not worried to steal somebody’s nice(r) present. Whether those people interested in the involuntary exchange will speak again, I can’t tell. But I have to say that everyone managed to pick awesome gifts, so in the end I think we all were satisfied. Some slightly defeated, alright, but in general happy with what we got. Oh, all except one of us who, despite the repeated warm reminders, arrived waaaaay to late to participate. Next time, should such a scenario happen again, I will withdraw my gift from the pile so that the late comer(s) can swap gifts with me.

I also proposed my Christmas trivia quiz game again, and, oh, in case you get the same idea make sure there are no computational scientists in the room! I should have known that fob a scientist with Q&A lacking evidences and support is never a smart move…

Now, after the storm and the party have passed, my fridge is stuffed with a large selection of leftovers: fried chicken (of course), quiche, quinoa salad, cake, dumplings, mulled wine, a mushroom risotto that never was (I didn’t end up cooking it due to the already abundant offer), smoked salmon. I guess my Christmas will be longer this year.

And now time to get onto the next dinner planning.

*************

Christmas dinner party - Take I

Beautiful end of a beautiful day after beautiful end of a beautiful day (it doesn’t seem December at all), this year is closing in. Another year.

We’ve started with the Christmas parties already, for us usually happening way before their time as people tend to travel. So, before everyone runs away, we’re getting our Christmas outfits, presents and moods geared up.

Actually, I had decided I didn’t want to host parties anymore. Just too much hassle, too many people, too loud, too much testosterone around, this last one especially abundant for co-workers parties. Anyhow, it so happened that I got involved with three parties, without seeing them coming.

First one was the weekend just passed, the party group made of the friends from the neighbourhood. A friend’s apartment one floor below, was picked for the aperitif. Some of us sooner some later, everyone gathered there for a toast and some starters. The happy party then moved to my place to have dinner, proper Italian Christmas style: home made lasagna.

In order to finish cooking within the evening, I started all preparations a few hours earlier, helped (thankfully) by a friend, one of the other guests. We were there preparing the sauce, mixing the dough, rolling it, and we were late to the aperitif. But we made it. We even managed to assemble some finger food, prepare the desserts (yes, plural) and all before joining the others.

Also, since we don’t like boring, we organised a Secret Santa gift exchange, with some present stealing and some funny outcomes that kept us entertained all night long. If before my risky conversation topics were politics, religion and soccer, now they are politics, religion, soccer and bananas. HAHA.

For my Christmas dinners series I also prepared a quiz this year, and this first dinner saw its debut. Well, nothing original, just taking bits and pieces of information here and there and arranging them in a questionnaire. There was even a prize for the winner: home made banana pound cake. And no, I didn’t know before that the entire evening would revolve around bananas. It was not planned.

I have to say that playing the game after we’d had a few bottles already maybe wasn’t fair, as people’s minds were rather obfuscated. But that only increased the fun.
In the end, after a contested and ill-counter-argued question, we had a joint win. I thought that could have been a possibility, so I was prepared, for the joy of both winners. Two cakes. Phhhhhhewwwwwww!

There will be a second party soon, and with it a second trivia night. Maybe at the end of the whole round I shall proclaim the winner among the winners…stay tuned.

***************

Season's standards

So now December is the new November, or so it seems if we are to judge by the beginning of each day so far.

The sun is out, a bright diamond in the clear sky, it's warm, and the autumn colours shine in the morning light. It feels great to sit out on my balcony to sip my coffee these days, or sit on my sofa by the (open) window to bask in the sun, to ride to a park to read a book, or even a jog along the river. Everything feels really really good.

Essentially, the month started very well, blessed with temperatures above the season average and sunny, blue skies. A good change from what was just labeled a dark and rainy year.

Another reason for joy, a rather material one, is that the lucky bags usually sold from Jan 2nd (those paper bags filled with items at crazy discounted prices) are already out on all stores shelves! I don't really shop (except for food, I'd say), but there is one kind of bargain I am happy about: the make-up lucky bags. Packages contain a selection of items, from nail polish to eyeliners, for each major make-up brand. And whenever I get something I don't use or I already have, I can give it as present to friends or cousins. Got doubles, no troubles.

However, the fact that I can already find lucky bags, way before their usual time in January, means that the Japanese marketing magicians are rushing things.

Is it because sales are not going well and retailers are trying to captivate buyers? Is it because the economy is going south? Is it because people are getting used to prepare earlier each time for the seasonal appointments?

Whatever the reason, the key problem remains: what am I going to look forward to in January if I can have what I want in December?

*****************
