BAR Street - Tokyo

There is a bar somewhere near the Meiji Jingu stadium in Tokyo that may as well be one of the most interesting I have been in, so far.

The place is called BAR Street, its sign a red circle with a white stripe crossing it, horizontally…those of you out there who still remember some theory from the driving school days may have already guessed it. Kinda not that welcoming a sign, if one ever wants to enter.

Anyway, when the elevator doors open, patrons are ejected to a dimly lit square, or I shall better say a “street”, where small outdoor tables and chairs are arranged, and then a set of 7 different tiny bars opening around such street. I guess it was meant to look like some summer towns in the Mediterranean, and yes that’s what I thought at a first glance. Each of the bars is unique, in both style and drinks selection: a bar for tequila lovers, one for herbal concoctions lovers, a bar specialised in sake (Japanese rice/potato wine), one for whiskey, a bar with a tropical flavour, an oyster bar, and…you get the picture.

There is even a special deal for women, called “Ladies fast pass”. This deal allows girls to buy a pass for the night, spending only 3000yen for unlimited, free flow drinks. Ehm, choosing from a rather scarce list of beverages, actually. Er, well, unlimited but within 10 hours form the time of purchase. Which, ehm, should be between 6pm and 8pm. And, ehm, friends without the pass, or any male friend, can’t even try a sip of the girls drink. Strict rule. We had one of the bar hosts to scold us girls when we passed the pina colada glass to the guys who were with us. Who, ehm, had purchased their drink already…

Well, I was not that thrilled to know all these many zillion trillion exceptions to the pass use, but the place fortunately made up for the bartenders lack of flexibility. We could even grab out drinks at any of the bars and then bring them with us to one of the tables on the “street”. So, yes, all in all it was a nice night out.

Buying the ladies pass is only convenient if you, woman, are thinking to have more than 5 drinks, otherwise just go and enjoy the vibes, without having to conform to all the cannot-do-this rules imposed by the pass. I think our group ended up spending the same amount of money, with and without pass. But we drank enough, and we were satisfied enough with the place (especially with the pina colada and someone, apparently, with the Japanese bartender at the whiskey place) to be thinking to go again.

C’e’ un bar da qualche parte vicino all stadio Meiji Jing di Tokyo che e’ sinora uno dei più interessanti che mi e’ capitato di scovare.

Questo posto si chiama BAR Street, e l’insegna e’ un cerchio rosso con una striscia bianca proprio in mezzo…ora, coloro che ancora si ricordano qualcosa della teoria di guida avranno gia capito a cosa mi riferisco. Che poi non e’ che sia uno di quei segni che invitano a entrare, se proprio la vogliamo dire tutta.

Comunque, quando si aprono le porte dell’ascensore, i clienti vengono rigurgitati dentro una piazzetta poco illuminata, o meglio dire una “strada” su cui sono sistemati piccoli tavolini e sedie e lungo la quale si trovano 7 diversi bar. Se l’impressione che ho auto a prima vista e’ quella giusta, e’ come se questo angolo fosse stato pensato per assomigliare alle città del mediterraneo. Ogni bar e’ unico, sia nello stile che nella selezione: un bar per gli amanti della tequila, uno per chi invece preferisce liquori alle erbe, uno per il vino giapponese, uno per i sapori più tropicali…insomma, avete capito.

Addirittura, le donne possono usufruire di una promozione, un pass che si può acquistare per l’equivalente di 30 euro circa e che permette di bere senza limiti. Scegliendo tra una lista scarsa di bevande, a dire il vero. E che, poi non e’ proprio senza limiti ma fino a dieci ore dall’acquisto del pass. Che poi può essere acquistato solo tra le sei e le otto di sera. E, in aggiunta, le amiche che non hanno il pass e tutti gli amici uomini non possono neanche assaggiare. Oh, serio. Una delle bariste ci ha ripreso quando abbiamo passato ai ragazzi la pina colada per fargliela provare…che poi, dico, erano amici nostri e tra le altre cose avevano gia preso il loro drink…va beh.

Si, alla fin fine proprio contenta di sapere di tutte queste miriadi di eccezioni non mi ha certo fatto piacere, pero’ il posticino ha un po’ salvato la situazione e ci ha ripagati della mancanza di flessibilità dei gestori. E poi, dai, potevamo tranquillamente ordinare da bere al bar e poi andarci a sedere a uno dei tavolini in “strada”.

Ora, donna, comprare questo pass ti conviene solo se hai in programma di bere più di cinque drink, altrimenti goditi tranquillamente l’atmosfera, senza tra l’altro dover seguire tutte le regole stupide che sono imposte a chi usa il pass. Penso che nel nostro gruppo abbiamo finito col pagare tutti la stessa cifra, ma abbiamo bevuto abbastanza e siamo rimasti soddisfatti (in particolare dalla pina colada e qualcuno, a quanto pare, dal bartender giapponese che stava a whisky bar) a tal punto che pensiamo di ritornarci.
