Showa day with a special housemate

It's Showa Day today in Japan!

Once the birthday of the former emperor, the date was later changed into Greenery day in honor of the former emperor's love for nature and later became the day to remember the former emperor of the Showa dynasty, while the Greenery day was moved to May 4, and the Golden Week was initiated.

So, what do the Japanese do on this day? Not much, in fact. The holiday nowadays only reminds the Japanese about the years of that emperor's controversial ruling.

What did I do on this day? Well, plenty. I was already on dog duty, first day. so, first I had to deal with a sad puppy, after his owner had left. Clearly he doesn't like the fact that someone else is staying in his house, sitting on his couch, walking him.

The exercise is actually the only good thing that works to distract him, and in addition it gives me with an amazing workout. So, I walked him three times today. I probably can skip the evening walk, I reckon, as he is right now passed out on the sofa. I took him to Komazawa olympic park, full of enough distractions to keep him busy, and I was joined by a friend who brought all the necessary items for a picnic, including sandwiches (Saint, now!). The gathering was nice, but often interrupted by a combination of the following: dog barking at kids near us, dog barking at dogs, dog pointing at dogs, dog pointing at random runners, dog munching on grass, dog chasing birds. I basically had to stay on the alert and hoping not to get caught up in some canine diatribe...

I am aware of the fact that doggy here doesn't trust me (where is my human gone?), and ignores me (oh, but wait a second, this human has food!), and I hope I'll win him.

I though that as this being the first day (and just parted form his human), I could give him a few treats, as I need to reassure him somehow that I am not an opponent. Let's see what happens at bedtime: if he hops on my bed, then I am in!

Oggi in Giappone e' Showa day!

Temporary partnership

Recently there have been a few changes in my daily routine. Like this one: for the next month I will be broadcasting from Meguro, where I will live and dog-sit.

The reason why I had to move (temporarily, only temporarily) to a different place is that I can't have pets at home, building complex rules. That's why, having offered my dog-sitting expertise (smirk), I am the one who's going where the dog is, not viceversa. And that's going to be for a month.

I hope things will work out between me and him (the hound). We've known each other for years, but we haven't spent much time together...will I be able to take care of another life, 24/7?
I've always had dogs back home in Sicily, fed with whatever leftovers of our meals are there, free to run and bark and scare the hell out of people passing by our property fence. In short, it was low maintenance.
But when one lives in a city, in a house with no land around, then such a pleasurable company becomes a demanding one. The dog's owner knows it well. And I know it well, too. So why agreeing to such a demand? Because, if you knew the dog, you'd have done the same.

I am going to have an interesting month ahead, especially concerning the changing in commuting route: I will have to take trains twice a day, crowded trains during rush hours, twice a day! THIS will be the real challenge. In all my years living in Japan, I never managed to overcome my anthropophobia, despite the recurrent exposure (some say exposure is the key to win, hmmm), and I guess I never will...anyway, there will be plenty of exposure for the next month! I see my expected survival rate to diminish dramatically. Wish me luck!

Fortunately, thanks to the upcoming Golden Week break, I will be spared of some days of terror. I will be rather busy in getting to know my new temp neighborhood in those days, instead.

In poche parole, erano poco impegno.

Needs and Feeds

Maybe preferences, hobbies, likes change with age…or maybe there are different hobbies, preferences, needs for every age.

Maybe at some point flatness in life take over experimentation and curiosity…or maybe due to the weakening of enthusiasm one falls into a routine.

Maybe it's the mood to influence decision making…or maybe decisions taken in life lead to inner decadence.

Whether all of this is true or not, the fact is that while before I loved and enjoyed going out, visiting places, do new things, dancing, now all those very same things bring anxiety. And I am not saying that I don't like those things anymore, no. I am saying that doing those things now takes more energy and requires more motivation. As if I were out of the loop. Or Like a fish out of water.

What tends to happen lately instead, is that I find myself invited at friend's homes, new and old friends, and do what it seems I can do best: take over their kitchens. The last few weeks I was doubly taken: I do give cooking classes and also improvise recipes at other people's places. Both activities are going, for the time being, well.

Speaking of cooking classes, we have to still understand if I am interesting to the public…my second class had to be canceled last minute due to lack of sign-ups, so I was left with a fridge full and a suddenly free afternoon. I actually could have a long relaxed lunch with friends out on a sunny terrace looking at the bay, and I later invited a couple of Sicilian friends over so that they helped me with getting rid of the food I had bought for the class. Win win. No need to add, I also had enough food cooked and more to cook for the day after, at a friend's party. Of course.

The weekend after that, I improvise as pastry chef, and baked a cake for a friend's birthday. So, now I am as comfortable at friend's kitchens as at my own. I do really hope such friends like my taking over…

But now, spring is in its prime, with color explosions everywhere, and it feels like one wants to spend as much time as possible out in the nature more and more, so…take a break from home parties or better switch to picnic mode?

Blossom fiasco

One day trees are bare, the next day they're in full bloom and the day after they are all green. That's more or less, summarized, the lifetime of perhaps the most insane activity in Japan. Yes, I am referring to the cherry blossom viewing. Catching the perfect moment of max blooming factor is a matter of deep concern every year: cherry blossom forecast (yes, it exists) helps a lot, but there is one fierce competitor to nature that complicates things, and that is Nature herself…not only cherry blossom is transient and extremely short, in addition strong winds and rainfall endanger the flowers already short life.

Last weekend of March initiated the sakura frenzy. The first weekend of April already sentenced its termination rather prematurely. By winds and rain that were unpredictable till the very day.

I do not really feel the urge to pick right the one day when the entire metropolis wants to get out and find their spot under a cherry tree ( I'm crowd-o-phobic and this country is crowd-o-phil)…I overall prefer to enjoy spring in a much calmer mode, observe nature waking up little by little. And trust me even doing so is difficult, as we're so caught up in our everyday life that we miss all the fine details (see opening phrase). Despite my firm desertion, though, I paid a visit to Yoyogi park -the supreme hanami spot- on Saturday. As did another 2.3 million people (pets and babies excluded). I bet the planet's center of mass shifted a little. More than for my interest in the park, I was sucked up in the gravity of the situation (getting better and better at puns uh) by my agreeing to meet a friend on a tight schedule but with a wish to see some flowers before the rain came. And for the law of big numbers by which the more people out, the more chances to see someone you know, I ended up stopping every second group of people as I heard my name called often. Mind blowing. On the other hand, running away from the densely packed park and nearby station felt better, much much much better.

The original weekend plan was not to visit the park, but to meet up with friends in Asakusa on Sunday, and spend a few hours by the riverside, at Sumida park. Of course it rained on Sunday. We decided to go ahead with the plan but we just had lunch indoor, and sat at a very nice warehouse-turned-industrial-hipster-chic hostel cafe. Great place with minimal design, populated by backpackers and tourists who chilled out waiting for the rain to stop. I can totally picture myself spending hours there, sunk in my sofa reading, watching people passing by, writing on my laptop, sipping coffee, chatting, all of this happening in slow motion.

Tokyo Sky Tree tip disappeared into the thick clouds. I wonder whether people at the observatory up there saw only clouds below them, Burj Khalifa style (have you seen those amazing aerial images of Dubai in the mist?)…it is the tallest structure in Japan, after all...

I also need to reassure my folks back home about my cries of not finding Easter eggs here: emergency subsided. I had something better the other day. I had colomba (Italian typical easter dessert, dove-shaped). No, not any colomba…real Sicilian artisanal colomba by Fiasconaro…enough said.

**************
