Beer, Soccer and Oneness

Speaking again of the world cup, I was often asked whether I am going to follow the games and (after I commented that I don't follow soccer and that I am completely ignorant) why am I not?…after all this is the World Cup!

Seriously, I am not a soccer fan. I am immune to all the jokes and the comments about my nation's team, whether they sing the anthem or not, whether they suck or not, whether they lose or not…but if with the excuse of a game we decide to go out and have some drinks in front of a TV screen, then I can very well "suffer" together with coach Prandelli about the fate of Italy's team.

So yes, Italy plays its second game at 1am on Saturday, Japan time, and what we decide to do is to get together around 11pm on a Friday, hit the road by car (yes, we are that blessed to have a car, a sober driver, Depeche Mode in the stereo and a table reservation at a British pub in the neighborhood of Tokyo Sky Tree) and rejoice or despair about the result of the game. And laugh at all those poor Japs who passed out at their tables in the middle of the game.

We were the only foreign people in the place, and the loudest of course. D, my one and only sensei, this time was giving the A to Z class on soccer to Jayz, who needed it more than me. I just listened aside, concealing my amazement at how much a person can know about everything…

Anyhow, it was a nice game to watch, with a Costa Rica all into defending and pressing and a Italy with a million of missed chances to score, too close-marked to be performing well. Poor Mario, the lone striker in the team, lost his cool quickly…how to blame him. Italy lost, leaving Gloria (no better choice of a name for a glorious person, man) and Motakis a little annoyed, they needed anything but 1-0 for their betting.

Around 3:30am we hit the road again, the sky already brightening, the roads silent and traffic-free, the cool morning air making me shiver.

There I was in the car, resting my head on my friend's lap and having my moment of connection with the universe, watching the buildings and roads light pass by, nearly oblivious to the conversation, and thinking that I couldn't ask for more: good company, drinks, a ride back home, a hug, kisses and a comfy bed at home where I passed out instantly.

RIKEN World Cup Fever

World Cup fever is heating up the office corridors. Productivity is decreasing, no other topics but soccer games are all they can talk about, people show up at weird times...if usually we worry about no-shows, we now first check the world cup calendar, wins and defeats, and then we can stop worrying (or worry more).

Late afternoons may just become the best time of the day, not only because yet another working day is over, but also because the boys gather on the lawn to play soccer and I have a very good excuse to go downstairs and support.

There had always been a handful of guys in the division who regularly played soccer during lunch break, but at some point I guess life got busier for them and they stopped. But the other day 13 guys, THIRTEEN! were playing an amazing game.

And world cup it was, with 11 countries represented, everyone bringing their own playing style in.
Players warm up, they make 2 teams, although more players keep coming for the next 30 minutes and just join in, rules are made on the fly, one team even has one reserve, then it all gets confusing when the other team uses the reserve too....ahh, the beauty of a live game! Michi is known to be playing barefoot, how he does I have no idea. Others play bare chest, but, well, it's hot outside (no other reasons other than that I think, no cute girls whom to show off for, so…), besides it doesn't hurt the eye -mine. D wears some shorts that make him look naked from far away apart from a belt, so all one can see in the distance is a tall underfed sumo wrestler who's trying soccer. HAHA. As well as shoeless players, we have players in their Derby's, we have players who dangerously keep their spectacles on, we even have Jayz, sitting on the bench who could play the role of a coach in despair, and we also have unaware victims on the field: grasshoppers, bugs and the like that live in the un-mown flowery meadow…
The game gets entangling, thrilling, the Greek hits the Pole, oh no, the Pole hits the Greek, no they both hit the pole....I can only see a throng around the ball -wait, where's the ball? Man down! Man down!

Time.

Game resumes, the Greek screams and shouts, the Italian pushes for some more bravery, the Frenchman puts up the best performance as an impenetrable wall between the goal and the offense, the bballers do what they know best -jump high-, the Pole swears and instigates to violence, fortunately there were no hooligans watching the game or it would have all ended up in a blood bath…
All in all they created a few good actions, assists, crosses, penalties and fails for a long hour. I think that secretly, from the building windows, the whole RIKEN was watching such an amazing game. Also, we were making a lot of noise, but hey, it all happened AFTER regular working hours. We are excused. I am now looking forward to the next exciting game.

After the game was over, the bballers continued to the hoop, and the others went for a cold beer. Life can be good.

Tempo.

Midsummer - Pensieri sparsi

Halfway point through 2014, and it is time for scrambled thoughts.

You must know that Japanese mothers like buying the same clothes to their children of different age. Not twins, I mean. I haven't understood why they do so, but I often see boys and girls followed by their mini-me little brothers or sisters. So, today, when I saw three girls wearing the same dress I didn't blink. But then I noticed they were of the same height, same size, same shape AND identically dressed. Weird. Only when I could see their face my jaw dropped, as I was staring at triplets! Cute but scary, I felt surrounded by clones.

Yokohama bay area is absolutely wonderful in summer, open, breezy, chilled out. But the water stank so much I had the impression I was walking along Venice canals in a humid hot day….and today was not humid at all, I have to say. Take a mental note not to go again when the tide is at its lowest. But there I was, too late to change my mind, so I took a break, sat in the grass under a tree to eat an apple, just until my nose got used to the new smell. I continued my walk all the way through the bay till I reached Yamashita park, then I picked my perfect spot: a huge tree to lean on, seaside view in the far distance, just to know that water is there. Being near the water, especially when summer comes, is a primary need for me. Water has the calming effect that's needed when life swirls around, it is water I turn to when I want to find peace of mind and relax. I spent the hottest hours of the day sitting under the shade, eating home made food, reading and watching people. There was this kid that was practicing back flips and the like, with no apparent fear of breaking his neck. I feared he would.

There should be more, many more trees all around the bay area. True that there are green spots where to sit and rest, there are promenades, there are paved courts, there is just a lot of space and green. But trees…..just the walk from the island to the park is entirely exposed to the elements, and it is not pleasant at all in a hot day.

I do need a break. Not one like Easter holidays to see family, but a break from everything. I need to run away and meet with my natural element, hear the sound of the waves, feel the freshness on my skin, see the flat, blue expanse and smell the coconut flavor of tanning lotion. I'll just have to make sure to have that break and make it long.

Yoga with Lisa

I definitely have been doing more during this weekend than in months. For one thing, I don't remember I have ever slept (forced myself into it, I shall say) till so late in the morning, but that doesn't mean nor imply that I feel rested.

We had a break from the heavy rain today, which meant I could finally do laundry. It also meant that I could go and attend a yoga class in Omotesando by my friend Lisa. I was looking forward to it, and the opening in the clouds was the sign I was waiting for. Super light yoga mat on one shoulder, umbrella in hand, there I go to meet my torturer.

I have attended other classes before, and I haven't. What I mean with it is that I have been trying to include yoga in my daily routines, but without basis. At the beginning I did follow classes in campus that were taught in Japanese -I could understand only half of it, by some instructor who didn't care much about how well or how correct we were executing each pose. Classes thus weren't necessarily leaving me with that feeling of wellness everyone talks about, but at least I could start to learn (more or less well) some of the basic poses (This reminds me that I have to sing up for this month's class!!). So I can't tell if that's attending a class. Then I just went on by myself, watch this, read that, try at home, and so on.

But then my friend got picked to teach two classes (beginner and intermediate) on Sundays at this studio (check her out if you have time, here!), so I took the chance to both see my friend teaching her first class and follow it, this time for real.

She was a bit nervous, as anyone could be at the first class, but she did teach well. At least for my judgment, that is. For once I could execute the series without the need of looking around me to figure out what I was supposed to do because I couldn't understand everything, and she also would walk around and fix this angle or pull that leg more if needed (no pun intended). I mean, yeah, I now know that I wasn't doing many of the poses that correctly. The level of advanced class wasn't so hard for me to follow, given that many of the exercises find a place in my routines already, but in the balance stuff I am still not doing quite well. I should practice more. I see myself going back to her classes from time to time.
As I say, regularity is not in my vocabulary, but anyway there must be other Sundays when I could just hang my mat over my shoulder and take a stroll in Omotesando after three hours of body wellness.

**************

My friend is a Guru

We're officially into the rainy season again, and with it comes the state of misery and uneasiness we inevitable fall in. Damp air doesn't relieve us from the heat of Japanese summers, grey and rainy days don't leave us many options but wishing to be in bed all day. The air stinks, the ground stinks, water stinks, dogs stink, people stink, everything stinks, and everything sticks. Eww.

To crown a semester made of many difficulties, the force of "tsuyu" drags me down further. A meteoropathic lunatic as I am, you see that this season of the year, although it is nearly summer as stated by the position of the earth relative to the sun, isn't pulling out the best of me. What it's pulling out of me is only my energy.

It is in these days when depression becomes my best advisor, it is in these days when I think more about myself and my "first world problems", the well known mantra of what am I doing here and all that….

Well, now, I could just do that….or instead I could go out anyway and meet up with one of the most insightful people and the best life coach and friend I know. Nope, he's not coach D -that's the sports master. I follow coach U for what concerns the personal stuff. I love our introspective talks, I love his useful life hacks, he's always got something new to suggest. We spend hours and hours mentioning books, people -inspiring, influential people- and real cases, we share and compare experiences. And if we do so while sitting inside a cool cafe in Roppongi Hills, watching the uniform grey sky, it's even better. We jump from sociology to psychology, to physics, to computer science, to biology, to behavior analysis, we touch work, colleagues, we move onto friends old and new, we proceed to meditation and healing, philosophy, we weigh the environment we grew up versus the environment we live our adult lives, we plan ahead what to do and where to go next….I always learn a lot from those conversations, I always go back home feeling lighter and richer.

Today my friend's encouragements energized me and I felt good as it hadn't happened in a long time now. I now know that I have to try physics, not machine learning (I am not giving up on a machine gun against my neighbor though) approaches, to understand stuff and I have to think the way buddhists do. Easier said than done, knowing myself, but see how long I can keep this state of mind for.

Workplace, workout and golden dancers

Work is an important part of our adult's life, so is workout. Big companies provide their employees with recreational spaces, gyms, reading rooms, and what not. There is a reason for that: healthy mind in healthy body, or in other words brain works better if the body is active. Distractions are paradoxically vital in jobs where the most concentration is required like research, programming, experiment design. Unless one is caught up in some concentration traps, we need to move our eyes away from the screen and do something else for a little.

There's a hoop in our campus, and there are a few chaps in my lab who play basketball, too. Every now and later, near the end of the day, they get together and practice shooting under the tree in the corner, while the sun sets behind Fuji, coating everything red gold. They play, they get sucked up in the game, they shout, they arm-fight, they sweat, then they are back to their desks ready for another round of sharp brain activity (did you know, brain works optimally in cycles of about 90 minutes).

Now, I am not a basketball player, nor a warm fan of the game. Sorry. But I got convinced to get out and watch them play a couple of times, and I liked it. Cheer on people you know is better than cheer on a bunch of players you barely know the names of.

Yesterday they -ballet, goldie, bear, greek freak and some others- all went to play at a nearby court and I tagged along with the excuse of hitching a car ride so that I ended up to be cheering audience. As good as they are at convincing me, I eventually stepped out of my dress and put on my sports gear….FIZZ, BWOOM, BOOSH, BADABOOM! Yes, and I did play nothinglessthan basketball. Sssshwamm!

Coach D being there to give me the 2 minutes all-in-one essential how-to course for beginners, and all the boys being nice pushing me to try, I had no excuses so I played. And even scored once -clearly the beginner's stroke of luck. Pop!

Strokes of bad luck, though, were the ones I blew here and there to everyone I was trying to block. Again, I had no faintest idea that I would end up playing a rough sport (even less that I would end up playing rough), so how could I possibly know to cut my fingernails …
Injuries report: a guy badly slashed along a bicep and on the neck, another guy believed scratched but impossible to state with certainty due to lack of evidence, my pinkie finger swollen due to a collision (impact with basket ball or rather opponent's muscle: undetermined), my other hand's ring finger close to the same fate, a pocket of blood collected under one of my toes due to free-foot-in-soft-shoe (for jogging, actually) friction, sore back.
Now I can't type and I limp…

Fortunately (or unfortunately, the verdict is still under consideration) I was carrying my running gear, solely with the idea of taking a jog that afternoon after work, but one never knows in life. Better be prepared. Even to long fingernails…

In the end I had more fun than I thought, and the boys didn't complain about my zillion tactical errors, even when I repeatedly passed the ball to the wrong team member….Did they have a good time, regardless? Was my 先生 happy? I just hoop so.

****************
