Broadcasting from work - Christmas with a grain of salt

Dunque, quanto siamo sinceri? O facciamo solo la predica? Quanto ci sentiamo soddisfatti?

Che ci crediate o no poco importa, non sta a me valutare o convincervi.

E alla fin fine perché no?

Felici feste a tutti.

**************

Cliche or not, real feeling or not, when Christmas comes everyone turns into well-wishing beings and sharing the love. All this is great, really great. We simply need it more often, not just when the timing is right. It is always a good time to show people, especially friends, family, how much we love them, miss them and how lonely we would be without them.

Today I am at work, sitting in the office, and I know I should do other stuff, but, it's Christmas day and it is the first time in my life and it is, well, weird. Work can wait for one hour or two today. What I need to share with you is more important.

So, how sincere are we? How prude? How preaching? How fulfilled? You will find all of those in the world and many more.

Half of the world is wealthy. Many in this half see Christmas as the best time for shopping, or for food marathons that end up waste a huge amount of resources. Many of us overdo all the time. Or anyway use the chance to show off and provoke. We all know someone like that Thankfully, many of us value things the right way and use a correct measure and think about others too.

The other half of the world still struggles how to carry on their lives. What's important for them is figure out a way to go to sleep and wake up the day after. To be alive is their main concern.

Now, I am not trying to play the good Samaritan here or willing to give the good example. I question myself, too. And not only at Christmas time. I am one of those who think they never do enough, never prove enough of what they can do. Believe it or not. Anyhow, it is not up to me to evaluate it. So...

Now, speaking of the consumerist half of the world, there are in general two parties when it comes to attach a value to our actions: those who are in favor of overdoing with celebrations, wishes and the like, and those who are against.

I know some who just can't wait to be engulfed in this money spending spree, so contagious, so viral, the urge to wish well everyone is irresistible. They have to put on their masks and act super nice for a few weeks. Imagine how it must be here in Japan where you have songs everywhere, people shouting wishes everywhere, Christmasy cakes and sweets everywhere....you get the picture, I guess. Well, why not. I mean, I am in favor of all this goodwill...what goes around comes around. But, why only this time around? What if it is all faking, though? Pretending? Fortunately, all people I know don't pretend, nor show off, nor exaggerate. Blessed.

I also know people who are sad in these days, they criticize the system, society, the bad habits and anything else they can. They can't be happy, they can't enjoy knowing that many people (well, the other half of the world, roughly) are suffering. All this is noble, very. But being sour doesn't make people more aware of the problems, doesn't make problems disappear. The whole point of the festive days is to in facts rejoice in relationships, in well being, in good feelings, being positive. We do have more than others, it is a fact, as there always will be people who are doing worse, and being grateful for all the good things we have obtained in life, especially in terms of human connections, is the minimum we can do to realize how lucky and blessed we have been. Celebrations should always been carried with thankfulness for our privileged condition in mind. The fact alone we have someone to be with, means that there is hope for everyone.

Those who only pretend they are doing good don't understand living.

This year I am lucky again, so lucky, and although far away from home I won't be alone. I will spend Christmas with wonderful people who will make my day worth it. Yes, too little, I reckon, but I am working on improving.

My wish to all is to let the excesses go, be passionate about your life and care about people around you. Not only at Christmas. Each of us can do a bit more everyday, just do it with gratitude and sincerely.

Happy holidays everyone

Computer and mouse aren't doing anything funny today (apart from some keyboard mess up not covered by the woodoo) and little helper Christmas bear is happily working today too...
