Summer break

Mah, staremo a vedere.

Many have already returned from summer holidays, many have yet to start....I belong to this second group of people. For me, time for the well deserved rest is hasn't come yet. But it's happening soon, very soon. And, as usual, I am not ready at all for it.
Not only I am not done with preparations, but I also have to already think of what awaits me once in homeland, like bank, hair cut, family business, work to do...
But, these holidays will also be good for meet-ups, and in facts I will catch up again with people I haven't seen in ages or more. My agenda is packed and getting more packed by the hour, I can't handle my schedule anymore and I am running out of appointments. I need time, more time!!
We'll see how it goes, just in case I will bring my ukulele with me and try and practice whenever I have some peace and quiet (if ever there will be), or while waiting/transferring at airports...
Yes, as usual in my case, the trip is not going to be short at all, neither smooth. But I will have time to talk about this later. For now I better focus on my passport.
Happy holidays (or happy returns to the ones who've already been)

All you need is LOVE @MAM

What is love?, Couple in love, Love in the losing, Family and love, Love beyond.

Love is something you fall into. Complimenti MAM!

****************

As usual, MAM Mori Art Museum, put up a fantastic exhibition.

To celebrate the 10 years, the museum organized a special exhibition with theme LOVE. The title is "All you need is LOVE" and takes the visitor through the important phases of a person's life and relationships, and it assembles remarkably all the manifestations of love from the most conventional ones to the most questionable, witty, love in the past and in the present, love in the internet era and love for the humankind, homosexual love, erotism, obsession, quasi-perversion.

Five the sections, grouping something like 200 artworks boasting names like De Chirico, Dali', Chagall, Magritte, Frida Kalho: What is love?, Couple in love, Love in the losing, Family and love, Love beyond. Photography is not allowed at the exhibition, apart from the installation by Kusama Yayoi, a well known Japanese and eccentric artist who loves decorating any creation and even herself with polka dots, so if you really want to see what this whole love thing is, either go to the museum (exhibit's on until September 1) or visit the website for a quick round through :)

Among the noticeable artworks, a beautiful sculpture of Paolo and Francesca (yes, Dante's comedy lovers); a short video titled "52 guaranteed ways", which is basically a funny video how-to for men, on how to get and keep their woman;  touching photos by Dashti, picturing a couple's life in a region between Iran and Iraq during the war; Asada family's portraits, engaged in various roles such as firefighter, patients, super heroes; very clever the collection of photos and media by a French artist who sent the breakup letter from her ex to other women and asked them to interpret and respond , their own personal ways. Alternative artistic expression are covered too, nude shots, sex, punk, with lots of photos of Lolita girls, overly tattooed and pierced  men and women, people with split tongue. There is, then, the polka dot section, a room with mirror walls full of tentacle-like shapes that contributed to the artist's fame; finally a tribute to the digital world with manga heroins, video games, touch pads.

What I think was missing? How about some tango….videos, images….I don't know….isn't tango itself love?

Not only the polka dot theme was central in the exhibition, but the whole Roppongi Hills was "infected": there even was a open air cafe by Louise Bourgeois's spider called polka dot cade, where, despite the heavy and humid summer air which is enveloping Tokyo in these days, people gathered to have a cool drink or to watch Tokyo Bay fireworks.

Love is something you fall into. Well, done MAM!

Dust still under the carpet

Dear Japanese Government,

I am very disappointed. Not that I wasn't aware of your ways to carry on and rule a country, but you're running out of excuses. Yes, I am talking about the nuclear crisis and the way this shebang is being handled. I mean, two years and a half later the accident, situation has improved by a hair. Do you care about the problem at all? Obviously you don't enough, otherwise it would be noticed. Do you realize its impact? To the environment, to the people, to the other countries…what goes around comes around.

You have been feeding your people and the worldwide media with half information, things are under control, then they aren't, then they are, then not….you decided to handle everything on your own, despite all offers from outside. You decided, in the face of all the evidences of negligence and incompetence by the nuke plant owner company, to leave them in charge. Did they offer you how much? Did they fool you big time? It looks like they did, indeed. Why are these people, after two years of nothingness, still warming up their chairs? Can't you just call someone more competent and put them in charge, instead?

I fear it is a matter of pride for you not to seek for external help, it is honor…we are not in the era of samurai anymore, hello? Those values have expired, times change, and adaptation to chance is what we should pursue. In times of globalization, nations cooperate for the common wellbeing. A help request, in this case, doesn't symbolize the loss of honor, the unfulfilled duty, it just means that the problem is too big for you to DIY. And it is in the interest of other countries, too, to keep it contained. Besides, if we were in the samurai era, your pride would have already seen you and the asses of all those you are covering dead, since the moral code would have forced you to suicide. You are neither surrendering, nor quitting, instead you are somehow playing blind and deef. Or, alternatively, you're helping the cover-up. Why? I mean, those a-holes are only worried about themselves...I fear I know the answer to this question….

And don't come and compare your country with mine…I know that Italy is sinking, worse than Japan. But for one thing, the Italian government sports a quality you can only dream of: they don't need to cover anything. They still live out of the poor people's lives, they still do all their activities, but they do everything en plain air. If they get , ehm, caught, they still walk out untouched, because "il fatto non sussiste". See, in my country is people who are blind and deaf. In your country, it's the government to cover its mouth and ears….

I was thinking, have you been cautious in eating your food, drinking your water, swimming in the ocean, soaking in the onsen? For the last two years, I have. I still do. I still check the label of all veggies and fruits I buy, as much as I can, although by now it would not make any sense….in two years who knows where the leakage has taken all the radioactivity to….the whole ecosystem is f***ed up. So, unless your food comes from Europe every day, you've been little concerned about yourself really (and your people, next). For the awareness about the environment, well, I can simply leave it to history, here…

Instead, you worry about the economic loss. But at the same time you're still building more infrastructure. This country has too much of it already. It doesn't need more. And keep in mind that more infrastructure means more maintenance over time. Where did the hell all those projects for the reconstruction of Tohoku region go? What was it, let me see…..whaling? Uh.

Who am I to criticize, you'd say, do I have any experience in taking care of a whole country, you'd ask. No. I cannot even imagine how much is needed to do that, I can just image it is not a piece of cake, and I don't want to be in your shoes. Definitely I don't. But I think I speak for many.

Now, let's get back to the pride part…you are so stubborn, you still want to show the world that you can do it alone, that you will eventually resurface from the ashes, like you have done several times in the past. Stop playing the victim role, stop eulogizing and praising yourself, we already know how great a nation Japan is. We do know. I am serious. Actually, I can tell you that Japan has got many lovers around the globe, for your thousands years old traditions, for your cultural heritage. Not only in modern times you are slowly erasing all that, but you are doing nothing to make your country be remembered.

How can you claim that the crisis is over, how can you stand for international relationships with other leaders, how can you enforce politics (democracy, transparency) and hope everyone will trust you, how can you promote tourism? Show first that problems are getting solved for real, and then you can show the phoenix is back.

You could say, why don't you leave then if you don't like the situation? Why are you complaining? Yes, point taken. It's. Not. That. Simple. And same thing is in your case, it's not that simple. But the real question here is one, for you, it's about the image of yourself you are giving. Isn't image everything in Japanese culture? Or is it more along the lines of, the outside is more important than what's inside? I leave you with this parallel situation: you're giving a present to a child. It is beautifully wrapped and it's got a big ribbon on it. A very piece of art. Nice. Nice, indeed. The kid then opens the present to find out it's an empty box. Do you think that child is still impressed by the packaging?

Throw away all those old heavy carpets, and clean up the place. I am tired of all this dust, I really am.

A balcony

Caldo. Umido.

***************

Hot. Humid. One cooler: a hammock on a balcony…

If there's a thing over-populated cities here lack is a balcony. Reason is partly because the horrible weather for 3/4 of the year, partly is the lack of space inside homes, and in the end people can't use their balconies as they should. And, in addition, they are tiny, dammit!

We, inhabitants of the pearl in the center of Mediterranean sea, those who have more sunny days than any other nation, more hot days than elsewhere, we make of the balcony another living space where we put plants (mostly geranium, like in Taormina), wooden table and chairs, someone even sofas….I mean, we make of the balcony a summer extension of our living room. And there's nothing better than spending the summer nights  there, when the house walls release the heat and the only way to survive is the cool air from East.

This is one of those nights when outside temperature is lower than inside one. Traffic is viable, the sky is free of clouds, the air is cool, cicadas sing ceaselessly…there is one comment to make here, that Japanese cicadas are evil creatures (they always remind me of the character in Metamorphosis, Kafka's novel) ,they are my worst enemy, and their singing is deafening, annoying and stopped only by the rain. In Sicily, cicadas sing in a more rhythmic and melodic way, their pitch is low and still audible, whereas the winged monsters here are just driving us nuts. But, it's their merit to remind me of home. From my privileged position here on my balcony, and I use it properly, not like an extra storage space, I watch all the apartments around, where tired men and women are crashing on their sofas to watch TV, or hang their washed clothes, they try to fight humidity. It's a bit like that daily life we give from granted back home, those gestures that makes you roll your eyes, those sounds we want to obliterate.

From my balcony at home in Sicily I can see hills, the scattered lights of cottages all around, families that have decided to live away happily from modernity, I can see stars in the sky, shiny and big, and the moon growing a little every day and then disappear, I see my dog sniffing around looking for victims or just something to focus on. From my balcony at home in Japan I see lights and buildings, and more buildings, a hint of sky, which gives me the most beautiful colors at sunset, and sometimes I can spot stars, I see clouds with interesting shapes, and a full moon that returns my gaze.

All in all, we would just need a bit more of landscape, a bit more of green in this town. And balconies. Larger balconies to enjoy the short summer.

RIKEN BBQ 2013

L'anno prossimo, forse….

*************

Friday was the RIKEN BBQ day. It's the usual summer event where the whole division is engaged in conversations, both scientific and not, while eating, drinking, having fun, enjoy the summer time. This year the Italian spot was taken by someone else who made the famous neapolitan pizzelle. Again, the great return of the marinated tuna, grilled meat, fruit, rice, and so on.

Efforts to make sure this year's party would turn out well were insane, and I hope people, many were outsiders, would feel at ease. The party schedule was packed with music and performances by some of the volunteering scientist who did this or that, we had ukulele performances, violin, piano, cello. Well, well, artists are among researchers, too!

My favorite DJ was in a better shape than ever, although without vinyls, bust still favorite. Grey clouds were hanging over the party, and I don't know what happened after I left, whether it rained or not….I hope nothing got ruined and more importantly that the show was not interrupted.

I was walking around the set up area in the afternoon, curious to see the performers rehearse…I think I missed out on an interesting evening, in the end…..exactly, I didn't join the party this year, a ritual that has seen me involved actively for the past 6 years, together with my loads of orange salads or bruschetta.

Oh, well, maybe next year…

Shotgun style interrogatory

Perché girate in bici sui marciapiedi?
Perche. Non. Mettete. Via. Solo. Un secondo. Quel. Cavolo. Di. Telefono. Quando. Attraversate??? O anche quando salite in treno? Guardate. Dove. State. Andando!
Evidentemente no, e no, e no.
Perché vi vestite in maniera così stupida?
Perché vi ostinate a masticare queste mentine rinfrescanti? Lavatevi i denti più spesso invece. No, lavatevi i denti. Punto. E chiudete la bocca quando vi appisolate.
Perche dovete sempre risucchiare quando mangiate? E ruttare?
Basta. Ca**o.

To the average Japanese social bi-product.

Why do you never question rules? Have you, I mean, do you understand why?
Why are there rules everywhere for every thing? And why on earth should a crane, or dog, or bears cartoons be the messengers in all signs? Words only not that effective uh? Sort of, if Hellokitty says it, we shall definitely follow?
Why do you drink a lot if you know you can't handle alcohol? I can't stand your dunken shows, neither can I your vomit anymore. Ew.
Why do trains stop at midnight? Not everyone likes to play cinderella in a sardine's can (packed trains). I can't stand physical contact with strangers, I just can't. The less can I stand your bad breaths. And I am already taller than you, mind you. Just imagine if I were small...
Why do you wear bigger shoes than your feet? And, ohdammit, why do you have to walk like you are digging a hole with your heel at each step? No treasure is hidden an inch below, you've got to dig much deeper. And get yourself a shovel in that case.
Why do I see rats, and cockroaches the size of an ipod, everywhere if you have such a reputation of being soooooooo clean?
Why do you eat cicadas? I mean, beef or fish not satisfactory enough? Double ew.
Btw, why are cockroaches and cicadas so big and dogs so small?
Why watermelons and apples are pretty much the same size?
Why does everything must be singularly wrapped in plastic? And then packaged?
Why do bicycle riders share the walkways with pedestrians? Do you know how dangerous you riders are in your multi-purpose two-wheels?
Why do you have to scream and giggle noisily every time you meet your girlfriends? Haven't you seen each other in a lifetime or what?
Why. Can't you. Just. For. A second. Put. That bloody. Phone. Away. When. You. Are crossing. The street????Or catching a train? Look. Where. You. Going!!!! FFS!
Why, also, do you have to always cross a street way after the light has turned red? I mean, if you do, use the momentum and RUN TILL YOU HAVE CROSSED! What's the point of start running and then resume your (slow, phone-texting-induced) pace right in the middle of the zebra crossing? Gee, and they wonder why accidents involving pedestrians are increasing....
Why are you so space-unaware? People around you don't dissolve when you bump into them, when your bags hit their legs...I need a armor.
Why do indoor places have to feel hot like the Caribbean when it's winter, and feel freezing cold like Siberia when it's summer? Ever heard of energy saving? Ever heard of environmental impact? Ever heard of balance? Obviously not, and not, and not.
Why do you dress so dumbly? I mean, wool skirts and all that polyester synthetic crap even in summer? Or, just a shirt and a business suit in winter? This the way you adapt to the crappy weather you have year-round?
Why, in winter, don't you wear a coat instead of patching your body with a dozen of those heat-packs?
Why do school kids have to freeze in winter in their uniforms? They not allowed to keep warm? Temper-building strategy my a**!
Why is all the made-in-china cheap crap so expensive here?
Why do you play voices everywhere? I know how useful it is to have the bus stops called for the blind people, but why the advertisement? Why the need to warn about traffic lights turning red, vehicle taking a left or a right? And why do the drivers have to repeat the EXACT same thing again? I see why people are not self-sufficient around here…
Why do you have to lean on me on a packed train? Grab a f****ng handle! One day I will move on a side and will laugh when you fail to get support and fall. Alternatively, I'd wear a spiky iron jacket, like the punks in the 80's...
Why do all men smell of the same cheap (bad) cologne? Or soy sauce? Shower one time more and spray aftershave one time less.
Why do you keep gulping breath-refreshing mints? Brush your teeth more often! Er, brush your teeth. Period. And shut your mouth when you doze.
Why do you have to slurp when you eat? And burp? And sniffle? And sneeze and cough without covering your mouths?
Why do you walk in a big group spread all over the walking space available? And don't stop right in the middle or I swear one day I will walk on you!
Why Japanese TV shows are only about dumb people doing dumb things? Or food? And why are always words and cartoons drawn on the screen?
Why in all warning signs about danger and violence the bad guy wears sun glasses?
Oh, and would you stop staring at me (without even hiding it) all the time like I were some sort of alien? I have four limbs like you, two eyes, two ears and a mouth like you. I notice you staring, you know? I even feel your stare when I am not directly in front of you. Stop doing it! FFS.
