Serpents...

Tra due settimane arriva l'anno del serpente. In base all'astrologia cinese, anche il serpente e' un animale che porta bene, perché ha le sembianze del drago, il segno zodiacale più importante e positivo di tutto lo zodiaco, e perché viene subito dopo di esso. Quindi la fortuna che contraddistingue ogni anno del drago accompagna anche l'anno del serpente. Accanto all'aura di riverenza che circonda il serpente, c'e' pero' anche un velo di riserbo nei confronti dei nati sotto questo segno, visto che il serpente e' associato anche al male, può strisciare silenziosamente vicino la preda e ucciderla. 

Ora, il serpente e' uno dei pochi animali che vanta una presenza massiccia nella simbologia e nella mitologia di molte culture e religioni, se non tutte, il che da' un'idea di quanto potente sia l'immagine che trasmette. Nella cristianità e' simbolo del male, il diavolo tentatore al peccato, mentre in altre religioni e' un simbolo di fertilità. Il serpente simboleggiava eternità, cosa associata alla credenza che quando un rettile cambiava pelle, era in realtà sopravvissuto alla morte. Gli antichi egizi credevano che i serpenti fossero l'origine del dio Ra, e nella cultura sumerica si pensava addirittura che i serpenti avessero proprietà di guarigione.

Ma anche la mitologia ha la sua da dire, riguardo alla figura del serpente, soprattutto legata alla nascita della vita e di ogni cosa come nella mitologia indiana, greca o cinese. Un'altra credenza diffusa era quella di considerare i serpenti come il legame tra il mondo sotterraneo e quello aereo, essendo creature che tendono a nascondersi in fenditure e buchi sotto terra. Spesso, poi, si riscontra l'associazione tra divinità e sembianze da rettile, che enfatizza ancora di più l'importanza e la grande influenza che questo animale ha esercitato sulle civiltà. 

In ogni caso, l'idea principale che rimane e' quella di un essere intrigante, intelligente, e allo stesso tempo temuto, cattivo. La natura calcolatrice e opportunista del serpente si estrapola dalla storia che racconta come sia nato l'ordine dei segni nell'oroscopo cinese. Infatti, i 12 segni furono ordinati in base alla velocità con cui ogni animale fosse riuscito ad attraversare un fiume; l'ordine d'arrivo e' l'ordine di apparizione nello zodiaco. Si racconta che il serpente, compensando per le sue difficoltà motorie, si sia prima accompagnato al cavallo per la traversata per poi saltare giù poco prima dell'arrivo, spaventandolo e guadagnandosi così il sesto posto proprio di fronte al cavallo. Quando si dice la furbizia…

A quanto pare, proprio in virtù degli influssi dell'anno del drago, il 2013 e' considerato un anno positivo da tutti i punti di vista e per tutti i segni dello zodiaco, chi più chi meno, quindi animo (e, personalmente, meglio che lo sia positivo, visto che qualcosa da ridire sull'anno appena trascorso ce l'avrei…) e mettetevi a lavorare sulla lista dei buoni propositi, l'anno nuovo sta per arrivare!

In two weeks comes the Year of the Snake. According to the Chinese astrology, the snake is also a positive animal sign, since it resembles a dragon, the most important and most positive sign of the whole zodiac, and since it comes right after that. So, as the year of the dragon is a good one, a sprinkle of that luck falls into the year of the snake, too. There is an aura of reverence around the snake, as well as a pinch of cautiousness towards the ones born in this year, because a snake is also paired with evil, it can silently approach a prey and kill it.

Now, snakes are those of very few animals that are massively present in symbolism and mythology of many cultures and in many religions, if not all, and this alone can already give an idea of how powerful the image it conveys is. In christianity, it is evil, the devil instigating to sin, whereas in other religions is a symbol of fertility. A snake meant also eternity, and that is due to the fact that a snake was believed to survive death when its intact curled skin was found on the ground with no traces of a body around. The Egyptians believed snakes were the origin where the sun Ra came from, and in Sumeric culture it was believed snakes had healing powers.

Mythology has got another deal of serpentine load, mainly connected to the origin of life and every thing, like Indian, Greek or Chinese mythology. Another common belief was that reptiles could be the connection with the underworld, because they tend to hide in cracks and holes in the ground. Often, too, reptilian figure and divinity coexist, where gods and goddesses have snake heads or bodies, all to emphasize the importance and the great influence this animal had in all civilizations.

Anyway, the main picture here is that snakes are intriguing, intelligent and  at the same time evil, fearful. The opportunistic and calculating nature of the snake can be extrapolated from the tale about the order of the zodiac animal signs in Chinese horoscope. It is said, the 12 signs were ordered based on the quickest animal to cross a river; the faster, the higher in the zodiac position. So, the snake, to compensate for its difficulties in motility, paired with the horse during the race to, then, jump right before the arrival in front of the horse and scare it away so to be able to make it as sixth. Tell me about circumvention…

So, now it seems that thanks to the influence from the year of the dragon, year 2013 is considered a good year in all aspects and for all signs, more or less, so get ready (and, personally, I really want this year to be positive for real, as I would have one thing or two to say about the previous one…) and start working on that list of resolutions, the new year is coming!
