Souvenir dal mondo

Pensavo di aver raccontato dei vari festival che a partire da maggio si avvicendano al parco di Yoyogi a Tokyo, ma mi sono resa conto che non sono stata assidua, quindi per rimediare cercherò di stilare un elenco approssimativo di quello che vi potrà capitare di vedere nei prossimi mesi.

Il fatto e' che si perde la bussola, ci sono così tanti eventi, si festeggiano così tanti gruppi etnici e si cercano così tante occasioni per starsene fuori, seduti su un telo di plastica blu a bere birra fino a svenire sotto al sole, mangiando specialità culinarie tipiche e regalandosi qualche souvenir dal mondo senza preoccuparsi di viaggiare in lungo e in largo….

Per quel che posso ricordare, e tracciare grazie a Mr Google e al mio archivio di foto, si incomincia a Maggio col festival della Tailandia, seguito dalla Jamaica, che rappresenta uno dei più interessanti con le tante mamme giapponesi trascinandosi dietro questi figli color cioccolata dai capelli neri e ricci….Poi Laos e Brasile, Indonesia. Ma non finisce qui, infatti ci sono ancora i festival di Africa, India, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, varie Oktoberfest e festival di cibo vegetariano. Insomma, tra maggio e Ottobre, basta trascinarvi al parco ogni fine settimana e state certi di non restare delusi. La cosa che potrebbe scoraggiarvi non poco e' la confusione: il parco di Yoyogi e' un punto turistico non indifferente, di per se attira moltissima gente, vuoi perché e' attaccato al tempio Meiji, il più importante in città, vuoi perché e' il ritrovo di quelli che si vestono in costume da personaggi dei cartoni, vuoi perché ci sono i ballerini di rock and roll, vuoi perché il verde pubblico, si sa, e' calamita per chi vuole rilassarsi dopo una settimana pesante. Per tutti questi motivi, e a causa di una stazione a mio avviso un po' piccola, soffrire di claustrofobia non e' una possibilità tanto remota. Eppure, vi dico, vale la pena.

Che poi, non solo i vari festival si ripetono di anno in anno, pressappoco lo stesso fine settimana, ma si sdoppiano, così che anche Yokohama, nello scenico ambiente che e' il piazzale di Aka Renga, giù alla baia, si può celebrare il festival tailandese, quello hawaiano, e ancora una oktoberfest per gradire, il festival africano, quello indiano e via discorrendo. Poi se si e' fortunati si riesce a beccare anche la festa del Peru, o addirittura si potrebbe pensare, opzione per i più pigri, di fare un giro al parco Yamashita a Yokohama verso ottobre e beccare il World festival, quando varie culture si concentrano assieme ed e' possibile fare il giro del mondo in pochi metri quadrati.

Sempre bello e interessante visitare questi festival, si può imparare tanto sulle varie culture, le danze, il cibo, gli oggetti, i vestiti e altro. E chi non ha la possibilità di viaggiare, lo può fare virtualmente passeggiando tra gli stand, magari comprando un souvenir, per niente virtuale, da portare a casa come ricordo.

I thought I had from time to time mentioned the various festivals on at Yoyogi park in Tokyo starting from May, but I have realized I haven't been so precise and I will try now to list approximately what you might experience in the next months.

The problem is that one easily loses track, there are so many events, so many ethnic groups celebrate their roots and there are many chances to go out, sit on a blue plastic sheet drinking beer till passing out under the sun, eat culinary specialties and buying a few world souvenir for one self without worrying about traveling the world…

For what I can remember, and trace back thanks to Mr Google and my photo archive, stuff gets started in May with the Thai festival, followed by the One Love Jamaica festival which is one of the most interesting to me, with the many Japanese mothers dragging those chocolate skin kids with curly black hair along…Then Laos and Brazil, Indonesia. It's not over yet, in facts there is Africa, India, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, a series of Oktoberfests and vegetarian food festivals. So, between May and October, you just need to show up at the park every weekend and you won't be disappointed. The one thing that might discourage you being the crowd: Yoyogi park is a touristic landmark, it attracts lots of people, be it because it is close to Meiji Shrine, the most important temple, be it because all costume players gather here on weekends, be it because many dancers show off their performances, be it because green areas are magnets for people who want to relax after a hard week. For all these reasons, and in my opinion the tiny station plays a role too, suffering claustrophobia here is not a remote option. Still, it is worth it.

Also, such festivals, not only repeat year after year, more or less on the same weekend, but they double, so that in Yokohama bay, too, in the scenic spot where Aka Renga is, one can celebrate the Thai festival, the Hawaiian, and again another Oktoberfest, the African festival, the Indian, and so on. If you are lucky you might see the Peru fest, or one can even think to go to Yamashita park, this is the option for the lazy ones, around October and have a look at the World festival when different cultures are celebrated together and a journey around the world takes just a few square meters.

Always interesting, one can learn a lot about the different cultures, dances, food, artworks, handcrafts, clothes and such. And who has no means for traveling for real, can do it virtually by walking around the booths, maybe even buying a souvenir, not at all virtual, to bring home as a memory.
