Venice, oh Venice!

Elisa is waiting for me, but I am not late as I don't have any baggage to claim, I am just transiting….

Venice welcomes me, on Easter Day, with a sun breaking through the clouds heavy with rain, and without hesitation my guide and I head to the lagoon. It is the first time I see Venice, a city loved and revered, a city which many others have been compared to but no one can in facts reach. My visit is quick, more or less 6 hours, but it is still exciting to be here, driving along the bridge connecting mainland with the island in the lagoon is like time traveling, and crossing the bridge between the parking area where everyone must leave the car and the island is like entering a hundreds years old sanctuary.

A knotted labyrinth of canals and small streets makes what the centre is, cut in the middle by the Grand Canal and kept all together by an endless number of bridges, very environment-friendly, as no motor vehicles are allowed and distances are covered by foot or catching one of the many service boats, or, for the lovers of retro, by gondola….how all can, after so many hundred years, still stand, while soaked in water, is a big mystery to me. It is maybe the faith of the Venetians, or the ability of the urban planners in the past….Also, the problem with the basements going bad because soaked is not the only one…there is humidity day by day eating up layers of paint from the walls, paintings and frescoes are covered by a dark film, waves erode the edges. Venice, then, is rather a miracle than a lagoon city.

The buildings standing straight or leaning is of a less importance at this time of the day, when it is about time to taste the lagoon delicacies. And the state of things is even less important after drinking the aperitif that rules in Venice: the spriz.
The advantage of being escorted by a local lies in avoiding those places invaded by tourists (many more in number than the lagoon residents) photographing at all costs the Rialto bridge or willing to buy the venetian carnival masks, and another advantage is in knowing interesting people and places.

We have lunch at a cozy restaurant on one of the many narrow streets in the city center, just facing the bar where we just had the famous aperitif. The restaurant owner is Elisa's dear friend, a very nice and fun guy who shows us special care. After a spriz, a white wine on a regal meal, and a strawberry liqueur at the end it is time to get lost in the city, I mean literally as we immediately feel the alcohol effects.

Venice to me shows all its ravishing beauty: different architectural styles can be recognized by looking at buildings, terraces and balconies decorated with flowers, tiny canals navigated up and down by gondolas heavy with visitors, boats anchored next to the houses' entrances, just like on mainland one uses to park the bike next to the main gate, colorful glasses, ace product here in Venice, rich decorations freshly restored on the buildings surrounding S Marc square, where a winged lion, symbol of the city, overlooks from a tall stand…

But, such a suggestive square, seen its collocation right on the water, is constantly challenged on two sides: from below it is subject to the lagoon itself that floods the square in case of high tide, rough weather and so on; then, it is endangered from above, where pigeons and seagulls make of the thousands people innocent victims…

Either with sun or with rain and dark sky, maybe thanks to the gondolas swinging at their anchoring poles and the pigeons, Venice keeps its beauty and the fame as a romantic city.

I thought I could experience a relaxing vacation, but something went wrong and I have to confess that one more week of holiday would have been welcome.

Due to a small incident along the journey, I decide it is time to get a new passport as soon as I touch Sicilian grounds, going without hope as I know how the Italian bureaucratic machine works, while I have to be quite surprised when I receive my new document just 3 days after submitting the documents!

With my disappointment, the warm weather seemed to have forgotten Sicily, where it rained and it was cold most of the time I was there. It was so bad that one afternoon, while there was a bot of sun, I got rid of my clothes and sat on my veranda to get sunbathed like a lizard. And they say Sicily is the land of sun and sea….I can be consoled by the fact that the situation was the same everywhere else.

The summary of the holiday is shrunk to basically quite nice family reunions, hours spent to be a nice aunt, hours and hours happily driving, night drinks based on wine and liqueurs, no going out, no shopping, only few friends actually met, and such few meet-ups were quick and not satisfying….but truth is that after so many months, no time is ever enough. I am sorry for those friends hoping in catching up, I tried my best, vut things not always go the way we want. That's why I hope for one visit of yours here, or I just wait for a better opportunity.

The usual trip to take friends around Sicily this time changes and takes form during a cousins reunion, when we decide to go to a nearby outlet village to attempt wild shopping. Fortunately for our savings, we weren't lucky. The rest of the vacation was a culinary journey between sweet and salty dishes, lost and rediscovered flavors, satisfied desire of traditional ice cream and savoring of wines as well as Easter treats.

Of the two stops in Kuala Lumpur, one was fruitful while the other one was just a pacing back and forth the terminal in the attempt to make time pass by faster. Venice is definitely a better shot, where I indulge in the local alcoholic tradition and a delicious fish based lunch. The quick visit in Belgium, apart from the rain that ruined the day regularly, but that gave me so many rainbows to see, was just walking and tasting local food, taking pictures and admiration (of liquid chocolate fountains, for the records).

And, for the first time in six years, I had to drop my usual drive along the coastline in Catania…I really needed some extra days!
