The Arabian Rock rocks Shinjuku

****************

After years of inactivity in this sector, I re-explore the world of theme restaurants, going for dinner to an interesting one: who loves the "Arabian nights" atmosphere will be delighted to know Arabian Rock is out there, with a quite anonymous entrance and dishes that impress more in presentation than in cuisine.

Don't expect prince of Persia welcoming you at the door, but actually you will enter only after a page has announced your approaching, and the door opens magically, like in the tale. A young lady with a veil on her head and a belly button well visible on her tummy greets you, tells you something and humbly will lead the way to your table, which is under a dim light. After that you will get a boiled golden egg treat as soon as you sit…service for a prince, one could say.
Furniture and design are not bad, the tables are all inside niches in where you can barely see, privacy is assured by a curtain and staff comes in only when called for. For a private, intimate dinner experience I'd say this is a place to consider.

The menu is not stunning, but it is enough creative, with sweets compositions looking like chariots, flaky pastry decorations, meat skewers and so on. Their cocktails are rather original and have exotic names, although, to be totally sure they are not making up persian names I should first bring Parisa along and ask her opinion. I strongly recommend the one with berries, with lots of fruits soaking in the alcohol.
If you are lucky enough (lucky you!) to celebrate your birthday here, the cake will come together with a crowd of characters form the fairy tales, like Aladdin, the genius, princess Jasmine …..which is the whole Disney entourage, to make it simpler.
The interesting, and surprising, thing is that , a birthday being announced in the restaurant, they turn the lights at ALL tables off, which is, mind you, rather irritating because, as above mentioned, the tables are already lit by minimal lights….turning all lights off (suddenly) leaves you in the darkness. This might be of enjoinment for the party guy, but not for the others….
Also, the birthday song, is basically blasted from all loudspeakers in the place. Again, this is not really liked by the ones who are not celebrating any birthday.
Try it yourself.
