Surprise surprise

Ci insegnano qualcosa i giapponesi.

***************

I have mentioned several times how the Japanese have this peculiar way to be surprised about anything. There's an explanation behind, I guess, that softens and at the same time lets us realize how the social and cultural factors influence these people.

Every new fact, unexpected event, any surprise generates wonder in the Japanese, in a way we use to see in children. That way that is lost while growing to adults with no imagination, like social robots. When we are older we tend to consider a lot of extraordinary events as ordinary, actually many times we barely notice what happens around us, how nice a curving train, a rainbow, the shape of clouds, the leaves moved by the wind are (see here). On the contrary, the Japanese, can't stop smiling, wondering, screaming childishly every one and the other time. They accompany their surprise with face expressions that speak by themselves already, they can't believe their own eyes, they go back to think again to what happened with no capacity to explain why, they mumble loudly.

This continuous being childish is caused by what? Well, surely the factor kawaii for which everything is, by their saying, cute. Second important factor is the lack of, in facts, childhood. Inside every Japanese there is a child, that child all of them were but who had to grow up too fast due to the social pressure, a pressure that comes in the first place right from the parents.
But they keep this little self alive forever, evident when I see them with their video games, their comics, their manic of collecting, their models, and so on.
They walk around with cute straps dangling from their phones, they photograph every year the very same cherry flowers in spring, they giggle among friends when they make a mistake....

They teach us something, them Japanese. They teach us that living together with our baby self is possible, that we can always look a the world with the eyes of whom had seen it for the first time.

They make us think, them Japanese. They make us think of how rigid the system they live in is, a system that wants them divided between school and school activities first, and between work and family after, a system that doesn't allow distractions nor diversions, a system founded on competition, a system that alienates and hollows.

Kakkoii VS kawaii

E' veramente così, soprattutto in Giappone.

...rosa
...piccolo
...tutto ciò che richiama l'infanzia
...hellokitty

*********************

Let's tell the truth, we see the model couple, he ugly and she pretty or vice-versa, and by thinking about the saying as old as the bible book that 'the opposites attract each other' we console ourselves...
It's really the case in Japan, here especially. Not the case that the ugly man is with the beautiful woman (actually, the vice-versa can't be and not because there aren't ugly women, rather because there aren't handsome men), but the case that the opposite poles are attracting each other.
This time 'Lifestyle' focuses on the dichotomy of all (see also the Yin&Yang post), the one of かっこいい vs かわいい.

...the dyed hair, colored towards the rust orange shade, so full of cosmetics that it is equivalent to a marble sculpture on the heads of every teenager
...he dude so loaded with rings and necklaces and crosses to make any ironmonger envious
...the boots with the tip pointing upwards, 3 sizes bigger
...the scooter with the loud music and the purple neon lights
...wrapping the head in a towel
...the jeans tucked up to one leg, worn on a shoe without sock
...wearing low waist pants (I mean, pelvic height type of low waist)
...pink
...small
...everything that recalls infantry
...hellokitty
...girls dressed up like porcelain dolls
...posing with their fingers making a 'V'

Now, it really seems the trendy couple be right the one made of she kawaii and he kakkoii. If that's alchemy, love, affinity, convenience or social rule...I don't know.
So many, so many couples where he is the dude with straightened hair, black shirt and jeans, pointing shoes, black leather bag, and she is the one with curled up hair, exaggerate makeup, mini-shorts and bubble type top, who walks in high heel shoes too big for her feet, crisscrossing legs.
The trendy couple is the one made of the two opposites, he speaks a Japanese made right for the males, rough, rude and is maybe smells of soy sauce, she changes her voice on purpose, sprays fruity essences on her hair and skin and doesn't stop giggling.

Frivolity and masculinity goes hand in hand, then, although in Japanese culture masculinity is something not really standing out, but many speak about it.

Somebody please explain the meaning of this all.

Happy year of the Rabbit!

***********************

A short summary of the previous years's been already give, and I redirect you there (HERE), but how was last year? The year of the tiger?

Yet a few more great trips marked the year just over, travels towards warm and sunny destinations like Okinawa and smaller islands, the archipelago of small islands off Izu, but also the Japanese alps and the discovery of snowboarding, undiscussed one and only winter sport from now on.
The year of the tiger was so, full of emotions, with 12 entire months (so far) invested in my new totalizing salsa passion, with the Spanish that is coming back rapidly and fluently, with the international friends.

From the viewpoint of health, I can't say I was as strong as a lion, and in facts my immune system often didn't manage to defend me from the various seasonal and non-seasonal colds. At times I felt weak but with some days of rest and an healthy diet, everything went away quickly.
All in all, I can consider to have had a positive outcome, on all fronts...

Today the year of the rabbit begins, officially, and new challenges are ready for me. This one will be perhaps the year of thinking, stability or maybe it will be the year of determination. I dunno yet, but the calm and quiet rabbit would come in my help with smart suggestions.

RABBIT - Profile
People born in the year of the rabbit are the luckiest among "the twelve animals." The rabbit is a symbol for mercy, elegance, amiability and worship of beauty. People born in this year are kind, speak gently, peaceful, quiet. They like to live easy lives. They are reserved persons, love arts and have a strong sense of justice. Whatever they do, they will start well and end well. This feature can make them learned scholars. They are also well adapted to work in government departments, and to be active on the political stage.
It seems that they will turn a deaf ear to other people's advice. In fact, they may be unable to recover after other people criticize them. To those they love, they are gentle and kind, while to some other people they may be perfunctory and halfhearted, even cool and merciless. Since they are refined and cultivated and self indulgent at the same time, they enjoy their lives, and think their own desires as the most important. They are always polite and civil even to their enemies.
People born in the year of the rabbit give others an impression of being frail-looking because of their gentle appearance. But, in fact, they are strong minded and have strong wills.

Secondo giorno dell'anno
Settimo giorno dell'anno

***************************

Officially today the new year according to the Chinese calendar starts. Today we enter the year of the rabbit.
We've already treated the Japanese NY case HERE , and the origins of the Chinese NY HERE but we haven't yet known what happens (or happened) during the celebrations....
The Chinese New Year starts with the New Moon on the first day of the new year and ends on the full moon 15 days later. The 15th day of the new year is called the Lantern Festival, which is celebrated at night with lantern displays.

10 Days before the New Year Day - Sweeping of the Grounds
Annual housecleaning, or the "sweeping of the grounds". Every corner of the house must be swept and cleaned in preparation for the new year. Couplets, short poems written in Classical Chinese, are expressions of good wishes for the family in the coming year. In addition, symbolic flowers and fruits were used to decorate the house, colorful new year pictures and paintings are placed on the walls.
The New Year's Eve - Reunion Dinner
A reunion dinner is held on New Year's Eve where members of the family, near and far, get together for celebration. The New Year's Eve dinner is very large and traditionally includes chicken. Fish is included, but not eaten up completely as fish leftovers are believed to bring good fortune.
First Day of the New Year
New Year's day is also celebrated within the family. Usually family members gather on the morning of New Year's Day. It is at this gathering that red packets with money are given to unmarried members of the family. Married couples usually give out two red packets on the first new year after being married. This is because the wife presents one and the husband presents one. In subsequent years they may give one as a couple.
Second Day of the New Year
The second day of the new year is usually for visiting the family of the wife if a couple is married. A large feast is also typically held on the second day of the new year.
Seventh Day of the New Year
The seventh day traditionally is known as the common man's birthday, the day when everyone grows one year older. People get together to make wishes for continued wealth and prosperity.
15th Day of the New Year - Lantern Festival
On the evening of that day, people carry lanterns into the streets to take part in a great parade. Young men would highlight the parade with a dragon dance.

A new post about the rabbit, its gifts, its lacks and such coming soon.
