****************************************

From Vesuvius to Etna....55 minutes flight and I'm home. The traditional appointment at the airport with the "godfather" happened, the usual visit to the bank too, and go for the ritual of the car ride along the coast.

Very few days to say hello to all, and then JJ arrives from Holland bringing a load of stroopwafeln! JJ's four days stay were blessed with sun, hight temperatures and dry air. My land, this time, really gave me the best it had to offer, even to me that I know well every color of the coast and of the inland.

Acting as a guide, and I didn't dislike it at all, I had thought of what important should we see...on top of all is Taormina. Super lucky to have found a fee-free parking spot (not an easy task!), we walk around the streets of the centre and, even though I have been in Taormina several times, I keep discovering places I hadn't yet seen, like the public garden from where the view of the sea is excellent. On the way, we thought we could stop by the beach at Giardini Naxos, and after also by the one at Letojanni, by far my favorite, just for a swim and catch some sun...And how clear and cool waters! How white and clean sand!!!The most beautiful sea I had ever stood by,I have to say, and now that I am in Japan, where the beaches can't even reach the minimum of Sicilian coasts standards, I miss my land more and more.....

Another must-see destination is Siracusa and its brand renewed Ortigia island, the historical and mundane centre of the city. For those who don't know,Siracusa was one of the first Greek colonies, and one of the few which keeps lots and lots of traces of that fascinating culture. Together with the Greek, other styles have been piling up on top of the centuries, like baroque, for instance, that extended also to other towns in the province. The islet of Ortigia has a rough perimeter, made of white rocky coast,no beaches, and people get tanned on a huge and flat rock located at the very South tip, facing the Maniace castle, a fortress-residence overseeing the emerald green Mediterranean see. the white of the cliffs is reflected onto the buildings freshly renewed, like the Dome and the square in front of it, so blinding white.
We spend the central hours at Fontane Bianche, another beach with fine white sand and blue sea, just like at the tropics. No more, no less.

After spending the 4 days with JJ, there's still some time....
There's time left to spend the nights with old and new friends,to catch-up, to talk about the latest gossips. Some of them have a family now, some of them are about to be a family, some others abandoned their old habits and matured, some haven't grown up at all....
And there's time left to enjoy the family, spend some days with the niece and nephew, pla with them, before the heart shrinks at the moment of the goodbye's.
Kids' sincere and loaded with love hugs hurt a lot, when they're bond to departures.

Bully my ride

******************************

This morning I go with the intention to ride my bicycle to work, and I found it with a tampered wheel. And this can't but be the act of a dumbass kid who want to prove to be smart.

I knew that Japanese kids are terrific to bully their mates. I knew that they're raised without education whatsoever and grow up without being punished when they did something wrong. But damaging someone's bike seems to me just and act of vandalism for free, a very very stupid act.
It is not the only happening, but it's rather the last of a long series of provocations. I'll start from the beginning....

Bicycles are parked at the ground floor of our complex, in an open space.
Some time ago I start noticing that the piece of cloth I use to wipe dust out from the bike seat, and it usually is UNDER the seat, is instead wrapped AROUND the seat...and this happens every time I go grab the bike. OK, till some idiot want to joke this way only is fine, even though it's not nice.

Tnen I start finding empty cans and paper fliers into the bike's basket. OK, seen that the bicycle looks quite dusted and old, they might think that it belongs to nobody and hence can be used as a rubbish bin...but when this happens even after several times I've cleaned the basket, then it seems intentional to me.

Now, as Japan has always been considered safe, I also kept a rubber net in the basket, which I used to prevent the shopping bags to fall out the basket on the way. Carrying on with the threats line, a few days ago I find the front wheel blocked with this very same net...it starts annoying me now, because I am sure at this point that those assclowns act against me.

This morning, finally, when I took a pair of scissors to free the front wheel, I notice the rear wheel is flat, oh, actually TAMPERED, since the whole valve is gone....now I should buy a NEW wheel, DISMANTLE the bike and FIX it again....which is not a thing one can do in a fingers flick, because it's the rear wheel....and who did it deliberately chose that and not the other...
And then, why?

What should I do at this point? If I had noticed the wheel before taking out the net I'd have done a nice photos hooting...

I have the feeling that soon the front wheel will be tampered with too. And I also have the feeling that, if that happens, someone would like to receive Sicilian style 'mild warnings'....

Italian holidays - Part I Campania

-Intro-

Grazie a Giordana.

-Intro-
Going back to Italy for a special event is priceless.
This year my vacation were changed in order to take part to Giordana and Stephan's wedding, forgetting about my usual traveling between Italy and Germany.
Short biography of the to-be-married couple: she leaves from Barcelona for a tour around the world. He, on vacation, meets her by chance at one of her stops.
The story ends with the classic "..and they lived happily together ever after".
One of the nicest moments was when we gathered at the hotel, some still wearing the ceremony dress, to sing at the sound of Martin's guitar till morning. Now I have a doubt: the phone in the hall, the one that rang no-stop till we finished singing....did it eventually stop??
As the chance makes the man a thief, with the excuse of being in Naples, the place been chosen for celebrating the german-neapolitan wedding, one can't but visiting the nearby sites of impact. Then, we go to the Sorrento coast for a few days of relax.

-Napoli-

We arrive in Naples from Rome in the evening, by car, in time to meet up with the other attenders worldwide and we have a nice dish of spaghetti with vongole (to avoid death threats because of envy I don't mention the deliciousness of the dish...)
The beauties of Naples can't be seen in one hour. That's how long we have before the wedding ceremony to take a short tour of the city. Every building in the center emanates history, wealth, culture. Little is needed to imagine to be at the French court, wearing one of those pompous and yet cumbersome dresses, walking on Plebiscito square together with officers and soldiers on horseback...
There are parts of the city, unfortunately, less fascinating, like the main entrance road. I though hope that, once the many working sites to build the subways will be closed, the efforts from both administration and citizens will be rewarded. One can breath air of restoration in Naples, and I hope it won't be polluted by those few who only care about their own business, and it will finally redeem itself from the bad reputation it has.

-Pompei-

Entrance ticket very expensive to visit one of the two towns famous for being destroyed by an eruption of Vesuvio, the volcano overseeing Naples' gulf which is worrisome because of its dormant status....it's not extinct, in facts, and besides the other things it is of a explosive type, meaning that in case of a new eruption there wouldn't be any hope for safety. Just imagine, as comparison, Etna in Sicily, a volcano ever active but characterized by slow and monitored eruptions.
But let's get back to Pompei. Until one walks between half-broken columns, empty squares, paved streets, walls with frescoes, it seems to be in ancient Rome....
Until one visits the remains of the spa, the brothel and its erotic frescoes (the most visited in the whole park, I wonder why!!!), the theatre, it's not clear where we are really, and art and culture of that period is what one admires...
Until one visits the part of the park where the corpses of the Pompeians in deep sleep buried by the eruption lay, we don't get the idea of the devastating power the natural event had. There any hilarity calms down and silence falls, as confirmation of the new consciousness.
The town covers a huge area and one week should be needed to visit all. But after a few hours under the burning sun we decide that for that day we did enough.

-Sorrento-

Sorrento rhymes with enjoyment. And in facts, with pizza by the meter, limoncellos, yummy fish-based dishes, songs at the pool, festive and happy company, I'd say that of fun we had lots. And I think of the poor old guy from the hotel who every night had to wait patiently for us to leave the hall to eventually turn off all the lights and go to bed himself too!!!
The geology of Sorrento coastal area is common to the whole area and also to the islets in the gulf, and alternates rocky cliffs to beaches. This gives to the landscape unicity and beauty, without concentrating efforts on 'prettifying' roads and houses because the nature thought of everything already. The town goes from down the port up on top of the rock where all the daily and nightly activities concentrate. From a terrace one can see the coast till Naples and the Vesuvio has got a perfect cone shape seen from here.
Sorrento represents our base, where to move from. Here we relax on the beach, it's here where we have our dinners, here where we walk along the lighted up main road, here where we window-shop, here where we spend our nights.
Also, Sorrento in Italian rhymes with profiting. Indeed, being a well known touristic destination, the prices of basically everything, souvenirs to public transportation, rise up, and tourists often don't even realise it. But this is the other side of tourism, and Sorrento for sure doesn't represent the exception.

-Capri-
Emerald green, blue, turquoise waters, rocky and curvy coast, imposing vegetation, caves and grottoes, precipitous villas...
The best way to see everything of an island when time available is not enough, is from the sea. It's appreciated more tif it's looked at from outside, because inside Capri resembles a center of fashion rather than one of the pearls of Naples gulf...it reminds me a lot of the Sicilian Taormina, that is a bunch of clothing shops, brands, luxury hotels, VIPs. Even the roads look similar, narrow, no cars allowed, lots of flowers and plants, perfect facades and tables outside bars and restaurants, square with the stunning view, stairs.
Islet of tales and legends, every corner in Capri is famous for something: the rock in the sea named 'arch of love', under which lovers should kiss, the white pebbles beach just one meter wide, where is said all the island population comes from, rabbit shaped rocks, rocks resembling madonnas, precipice where the king used to throw his lovers from, and so on and so forth. Capri offers a wide range of stories for everybody.
Yet Capri has its own fascination that goes beyond any imagination. Who has never been in capri don't know what they're missing. The bright colors in daytime, the twilight shadows, the night lights, every moment in Capri is magic.

-Positano-

Following an instant of madness, some of us decide to profit from being in the area and from Capri going to Positano, another town that climbs up the rocky side of the mountain. Positano is organized as a typical old fishermen centre: the houses face the sea and the walls are colored of a different shade, so that the fishermen on their way back home, from far in the distance can recognize their own and can feel warmed up by the thought that they'll rejoin their family soon.
Every corner in Positano is postcard-like, it looks like one of the perfect miniature creches that are made in Naples. Only me and Irma decide to tour the town, we also hitchhike a ride on a truck and we also went through, without knowing it, one of the many shortcuts that allow to go up and down the town in minutes: the stairs. I think I've never seen so many stairs like in Positano.
And in the evening, we find it. A restaurant, a terrace looking at the sea, fish based dishes: it's the ending of a vacation that will remain in our memories for a long time. Thanks to Giordana.

Cool Earth Day

Once a year, on July 7th, when people all across Japan are looking at the Milky Way celebrating Tanabata (star) festival, the Cool Earth Day is held. It's been decided so since 2008.

The hope is that this day will help everyone recognize the importance of the global environment and that it will also encourage to work towards a low-carbon society.

At RIKEN we participate as well, apparently, even though the efforts might look minimal. Yet, it's a sign for a change in Japanese consumistic society....an email spread by the big boss himself solicits us to:

1- Leave work on time, so that all lights can be turned off earlier than usual. (It makes so much sense here in Jp!!)

2-Turn off all lights from 8pm to 10pm

3-Do not drive to work, if possible

Check Cool Earth initiatives at Cool Earth and do the same on July 7th!!

*****************

Get Inspired

*********************************

Lately I lack inspirations.

My blog entries are scarce and of low quality. There would be plenty of topics, but truth is, the content without form says nothing, and just throwing words in, for the sake of it, results in a decrease of interest by the readers.

I feel like a glass making trainee who blows his own burning bubble, whose efforts rarely pay him off with a unique piece while very often he only manages to create scrawls of glass that end up thrown again in the furnace.

One can't always be productive, though. Even the biggest writers experience phases of hyper-activity alternating with phases of sterility, and so I console myself by thinking that my moment of intellectual void is a good sign...

Perhaps I'm blocked by boredom, or the fact that I haven't seen anything new or interesting is enough for having nothing to tell or share, it might be the heat cooking my brain and slowing down all movements, or more simply it can be that I have enough of killing some time in front of a pc...

Lost in frustrations

I think of what I'll bring back of these years in Japan, I think of what usefulness and fruitfulness is there, I think of what will remain as cultural and personal enrichment, of what I will tell one day about this land and its traditions...Some days I realize I didn't improve anything, or much. Many good resolutions, lots of hopes, and many failures.

As of today, the language barrier stands between me and the rest of the population of the nation (135Million). I was convinced that in one year I could handle any ordinary level conversation, and in facts after my first year of studies and ideograms practicing I almost succeeded. Then I quit. cause: laziness...Now my ordinary level in Japanese is as equal as a 3 years old kid's level. Saying I've lived in Japan for so long and knowing so little is not so nice....

I imposed myself to learn as much as I could at work, but after so long I'd say I haven't done big steps forward, professionally.
I was sure I'd have had clear ideas for life, I'd have paved my way and I'd have had everything under control, but I still wonder around and get probabilistic models for my future.

Thanks to mother nature, or to a space-time-environment system, I keep the same body as 12 years ago, a characteristic which many envy and many see as a door to anorexia...in any case, I feel I'm eighty years old: flexibility close to the one of a lego cube, minimal breathing capacity, non-existent resistance to strain, painful joints and back aching every second day. I thought I would do more for this bunch of bones and muscles I have, I still promise myself I'll go jogging along the river, or going to the gym, but in between say and do sits procrastinate.

May it be the rainy days (and in Japan they count up to 80% on one year), the unceasing hammering noises from sunrise to sunset, the thick air that can be cut with a knife, whatever may it be, sometimes the feeling of doing something pulls back, positivity leaves me, bravery reduces, enthusiasm disappears and only the grey of the skies and the buildings is left.

I have to get myself a board with colors. 16 million, like in a pc.
