Natale a Tokyo

*******************************

Christmas this year was quite funny and unusual. We all gathered at the Panariello-Strianese's, family and friends, to celebrate Christmas eve with traditional Italian food and much more. main characters were spaghetti and vongole, fried mix of fish, chicken and vegetables roll, Portuguese bacagliau, nuts in big quantities, dry figs, tiramisu and Neapolitan struffoli (of which I have the recipe thanks to signor Gennaro), liquor, limoncello....all in huge portions.

The festive table mates were well represented: Sicily(1),Puglia(1),Campania(5), but also Japan(1) and Portugal(1) and for the whole evening we didn't stop laughing.

I have to say, it was like being at home in Italy, and believe me, in such occasions, being alone is truly sad. But fortunately this year wasn't the case and contrarily to the odds of a quet and simple eve, we really really had fun.

The Christmas lunch demands same attention and dedication, and so to celebrate it at best how about an Italian restaurant in the Italian neighborhood of Shimbashi?

The restaurant is on Piazza Italia, a square in between tall buildings which host Italian-only restaurants and shops, and it is populated by genuine Italian staff only. The furniture is simple and curated, the walls are decorated with photos of Italian monuments, the inside is cozy. The joy which was with us the previous day didn't leave us of course and the lunch was a mix of jokes and laughters.

Now, at late afternoon, we walk towards Ginza, the most chic area of Tokyo to have a look at the boulevards and the shop windows decorated for christmas and to enter the shops with catchy promotions, the best of which was the one by an American clothing brand that put at the entrance a semi-naked hot guy available to be photographed with you...

So, beside the report on celebrations, it is to be said that I spent a traditional and yet different Christmas, and very nice too. Especially the walk in Ginza is not in everybody's possibilities: skyscrapers, decorated streets, busy crossings, warm and welcoming shops, people strolling, people busy with shopping, light, flavours, sounds....happy holidays from the most eclectic town, happy holidays from the most bizarre town, happy holidays fro the town that never stops, happy holidays from Tokyo.
