Once upon a time was a ninja...

********************************

Many lovers of the far East, especially of martial arts, associate Japan to a mysterious and fascinating figure. They are invisible, super fast, clever and full of resources. They move around silently, they're shadows in the night, they kill without being sensed. Infallible warriors, they are the

NINJAs

Akasaka in Tokyo is the recommended place to meet real ninjas. It's possible to have dinner while they, unseen and fast, pass by you tricking your senses with mastered appearance and disappearance, they serve you shiyuriken (ninja stars) and impress you with weird and unexpcted dishes.

One of the most rated theme restaurant her ein Tokyo is for sure ninjaakasaka, where -reservation provided- it is possible to enter for a few hours a typical atmosphere of the Edo era of some centuries ago, where dark rooms, secret passages, code messages between ninjas, extravagant food compositions and unexpected visits accompany a quite expensive dinner but worth a try, like in all the special places.

Proud of having a Norwegian ninja among us, we agree that there's no better place than ninjaakasaka for our sayonara. Me,sylly sally, momo, edv+gf, jj+gf, rigorously wearing black from head to toes, are ready for the fight.
The restaurant is anonymous, only a logo on a wall with no openings, and a almost invisible hole is the entrance. There a nice figure stands to welcome the customers, and with secretive moves she introduces us into another room wher we are asked whether we prefer to be escorted to our table through the conventional way or we are willing to walk through a secret and very dangerous passage instead. We split on this crucial choice and finally we enter the secret reign of ninjas: a place lit by a few low-power lights, basically dark, made of narrow and turning corridors. And, after we sit at our table, they lock us in, behind sliding panels. We don't know if it's for protection or for a more effective violence....

We have to unroll a paper to read the menu, where white-on-black it's possible to choose among a wide variety of dishes or entire course menus. Don't expect low prices, it's the opposite in facts....

Anyways, we order and we hope that in the meantime something unexpected happens. All the waiters wear, no need to say, real ninja outfits and show weapons like stars, knifes and such. they are all covered up to the eyes, they can't show themselves, and with my surprise they speak a good English. The ninja girls responsible for our table even gave us detailed explanations on all the dishes, what it is, what is inside and so on...And particularly strongly suggested us to try the beauty cocktail, a mix of non alcoholic stuff plus: collagen addition....

The portions were ridiculously small if compared to the ones at any other conventional restaurant, but at the end everybody agreed on our total satisfaction.
Every dish came with a very original presentation, all dishes different, with some fusion-style touch. Crackers shaped like ninja stars, served with foie gras started the dinner. Exceptional were the shells in a, real words, flaming presentation: after the seashells were put on the table, indeed, our dear ninja lit a fire -with a cow-shaped lighter- and transformed a pretty anonymous dish into something spectacular. All the starters were curated in the presentation and in the wise combination of flavors and ingredients. We then served us with a vegetarian soup, cooked on stones 300 degree hot -or that's what they told us- in front of us. The main dish, choice between fish or beef, came hidden respectively under a cover of seaweed or in a ceramic pot. While waiting between one dish and the next, we tried desperately to interact with the silent ninjas who were walking around the restaurant.

The desserts weren't an exception: we try some kind of sorbet revealing a different flavor at each bite. So all in all the experience was interesting and we had the chance to attend also a magic show when a ninja magician came to our table before we left. He was good both in the tricks performance and also in the way he involved us in the play. In front of the entrance of the restaurant, when we leave, other ninjas perform a few acrobatics and greet us asking to come again. We take a group photo before leaving the mysterious reign of ninjas behind us.
