Vuoi del the verde? -- Some green tea?

L'amaro del the?

Think about Japan and assign a color to it, which one do you have in mind? The red dot in the flag? The pink of the cherry blossoms? The blue of the student's uniforms? The white of the snow on mount Fuji? The yellow of of tempura? The green? Yeah, the dominant one is green: the green of wasabi, the green of parks and gardens, green......the green of tea.

Think about Japan and assign a taste to it, which one do you have in mind? The taste-non-taste of boiled rice? the salted of soy sauce? The very good taste of sushi? The sweet too much sweet of typical Japanese pastries made of rice flour and sweet red beans? The bitter of tea? Yeah, again, green tea.
Green tea is dominant here: don't want to enumerate the very many different qualities available in the market, based on the leaves picking season, the drying process duration, the dimension of the leaves, the origin from one or another area of Japan. Then there's the famous powder tea, the extraordinary matcha tea used for the ceremonies, there's the semi-powder tea, and so forth.

So, not only tea as is, not only in dosed bags, not only bottled, but also into a lot of food, as ingredient: matchalatte, green tea version of the Italian caffellatte, matchaccino, spongy sweets green colored filled with bean paste, green tea doughnuts, matcha chocolate -obviously its color is green-, chocolate filled with green tea cream, green tea ice cream, cakes, pastries, candies, everything IS green tea.

Un anno dopo - One year later

Cosa è cambiato in meglio

Cosa è cambiato in peggio

GRAZIE

Here is a very quick evaluation of my first 12 months abroad. The picture is not complete at all, but it gives an idea of what my life is now

One year has passed since I started my Japanese adventure. Now I am certain I'll work another year here. And after one year one might wish to make some estimations.

What got better
I have a job, I have my own life, I have my own apt, I have new and great friends, I live in a extraordinary place, I am learning the language of this productive people, I am growing up, I faced and won some small difficult situations that taught me some principles, I get my first satisfactions, I travel and visit dream places, I enrich my soul, I've been knowing green tea chocolate and ice cream.

What got worse
I am alone, far from family and dear friends,I'm far from my poor and sunny land I love so much, I have to learn how to cope with customs and folks here, I have to push myself when I'm living unhappy moments, I don't have mozzarella, I have to drink the coffee I find here, I don't have homemade bread, I don't have my dad's live oil, I can't find clothes and shoes.

What changed
I go home once a year rather than once a month, I don't ask my parents for money, I live in a big city, my everyday language is not Italian, I don't have my religious holidays, I have paid vacations, I eat sushi and tenpura rather then pasta and pesto, I don't live in Italy, I have my own bank account.

All in all I am happy of my first 12 months abroad. In this first step, though, I have just put my seeds into soil, I put water and sun, and now I have to wait for those seeds to become beautiful flowers. People, they, too, helped me a lot, either with a positive contribution or with a negative contribution. Some people helped me, some others stopped me, some others pushed me, sone others deluded me, some others supported me. What I am now I owe to them. I can't name them all one by one, I'd need 10 blogs for that, so to all of them I say
THANKS

Valentine's and White Day

----------------------------------------

In Japan, too, like in the most remote banana republic one can know, Valentine's day is the day for people in love. No need to say that here all show windows, shelves in the department stores, and any other exposable surfaces are overloaded with gifts and presents.

The most popular is chocolate: it comes in either one piece or hundred pieces boxes, either simple design or complex one, either flavoured or not, either home made or not, it is sold out.

Though, here, the gifts exchange doesn't happen at the same time. Indeed, on February 14 the girls only make efforts to find the perfect present, and only one month after, March 14, the guys on the White Day will give back the present.

In addition, price serves as a marker, different types of gift exist: there's the gift for the lover and the gift for the colleagues, this last one being a symbolic way to promote and maintain good relationship with coworkers.

So, living in a place where the respect for traditions is welcome, together with the other girls of the group I bought chocolate candies for boss and colleagues. They say that this thought will be given back also from the colleagues the next month..so I am waiting now to see what happens.

----------------------------------

I'm happy today. I'm happy because going out in the middle of the day, warmed up by the winter shiny sun in a fair and blue sky, beautiful in my dark sunglasses, walking toward the post office with my package to be sent, smiling seeing some kids playing with the pigeons, was a nice sensation and it turned up my mood.

I'm happy because I think that I'll spend one day with my italian friends tomorrow, for an all Italian event, and while looking for the perfect ingredients for my dishes, I think that Benigni is right: life is beautiful, my life is beautiful, at least today. I wish you all a beautiful life, especially to Oriana, my friend, today it's her birthday!

Mission: Australia

*******************************

Dear readers, I decided for the travel of my dreams. When I was in Italy I thought about how nice it would have been going to Australia, the farrest place in the planet, the land that, if one wants to go, one has to be armed with time and patience...it was so distant in that time....It's far even now, but never been closer, so I decided it's worth, I have to try this opportunity now that it's possible.

Finally my dream comes true. Intercontinental and internal flights, accommodations, all set. I'll leave in less than one month and I begin my adventure into an adventure: from the nippon adventure to the aussie adventure, a short 2-weeks parenthesis to go back to the not yet concluded experience in the reign of sushi.

L'anno del topo - The year of the mouse

February 7th, 2008, Chinese New Year.
Year of the earth mouse, and the first one in the zodiac. Firecrackers represent good luck, as they keep evil away with their light and they fill the streets. Red is dominant, too, and the houses entrances are decorated with the upside down "fu", because only in this position means that good fortune will stay in that house.

No pointing objects are to be used, while everything noisy is welcome. The year of the mouse brings abundance and is in favour of commerce and financial affairs.

In Chinatown, down in Yokohama, they celebrate the arrival of the new year with dragons, firecrackers, dances. this weekend I decided to go and see what happens in China....
